One of my dive buddies & I are on a kick to dive w/ Great Whites. I'd like to get some feedback on charters, best times of year & which part of cali will give us the best results. I'm trying to avoid going to South Africa or Australia.

I've been interested shark diving myself, especially since Blue Water, White Death was re-released on DVD...

Great White Adventures runs a charter out of San Francisco Bay that does cage dives with great whites off the Farallon Islands.

Their web site has all of the pertinent info RE: time of year, etc.

A LDS here was looking into potentially getting together a group to do this dive. I am on their mailing list and received information a while ago. Depending on your schedule, you might want to have a chat with them. I remember the price when going with that group was lower versus booking on your own through the Great White Adventures web site. The dive shop site is here:

The person that sent out the email was Raj. Good luck! Todd

Have you tried tying some raw chicken to your legs and going surfing?

Yeah but you will never see the shark :shakehead: You need to tie the chicken to your BUDDIES legs :lotsalove:

Mexico is the place to go for cage diving. The vis is way better and the water warmer.

Guadalupe Island, 150 miles off the Baja coast and 250 miles south of San Diego offers good visibility and great whites (at least in the fall season). Dove and filmed there with Dr, Guy Harvey about 2 1/2 years ago. Although we had one day of lousy vis (15-20 ft), the other days were about 80 ft and the expedition the previous year reported nearly 200 ft vis. Gives you a chance to see them coming from a ways away so you can set up your shots.

Of course I dive with them all the time in the waters of Santa Catalina Island... I just never see them (except topside from boats).

I have a spot paid for to do the Incredible Adventures cage dive off the Farallones September 29th. This was a present from my wife so I feel somewhat obliged to give it a shot, but in reality I have resigned myself to the fact that I'll likley spend the day looking out at pretty green water (even though the IA rep claims a 50% average for sightings). If I DO happend to see a GW I'll definitely post pics.
As most have stated, Guadalupe would be #1 if you are willing to pony up the $$.

Drikadiver,

Give the guys at Great White Adventures a call.
I've been on numerous trips with them.
They are the ones you want to go to Guadalupe with...510-814-8256

Here are 2 seperate websites, they are both the same company, one sites devoted to the Great Whites, and the other is for other shark trips.

Do yourself a favor and go! You won't be sorry...

You could always try Aumentos. :)

From Tribolet's discussion board:

We took a surface interval at the Breakwater and met up with a couple of hunters
who had a very close encounter with a Great White off Aumentos. Apparently they
were hunting and it was curious, and came right up to them and scared the
bejesus out them. One of the guys poked it with his spear gun to make it go
away, and they both swam into shallower water. Upon surfacing their boat was
quite a ways away. For obvious reasons they didn't want to swim to it. They
started shouting at other boaters that there was a great white and they wanted
to be taken out of the water. First people thought they were joking, then
someone decided they weren't and picked them up and took them back to their
boat. They then started telling everyone about the shark and suggesting they
get out of the water. They were really shaken up. They thought the aquarium
and Coast Guard should be notified and that someone should move the shark.
