I wasn't sure after seeing conflicting stories. I just didn't want to bring my family there and have the trip turn out bad.

The gulf is fluid, and so is oil. Winds, currents, and wave action will move masses of water and oil around the gulf until its all dissapated, eaten, collected, or has moved out to wreak havoc elsewhere.

What one person sees one day, doesn't necessarily reflect the next, or the day before... or an hour later.

You're reading different observations at different times, not conflicting stories.

I guess my point is that nobody here is speaking outside the truth, saying otherwise isn't going to bode well in this forum.

I dove Ft Pickins on Sunday. We didn't see any oil but when we came up after the second dive we did see a bunch of reporters standing on the sea wall who seemed disappointed that we didn't see any oil. My advice is keep talking to the local dive shops, as divers we all know that the people working there are going to keep us safe and they aren't going to knowingly put anyone in danger.

I think Bugman hit the nail on the head. Things are very different up and down the coast right now. Pensacola, Orange Beach, Alabama and points further West have seen oil on their beaches. Some just isolated tar balls, and others have had large clumps. As of yet Okaloosa County (Fort Walton Beach, Destin) have not had any "significant" land fall. BUT with some southwest winds perdicted...the story might change rapidly.

If anyone wants local reports, you can look at Channel 3's website. They are our local news station for the Pensacola/Fort Walton/Destin area. They have done a pretty good job of reporting. They seem to be trying to hold the media hysteria to a minimum.

I have a feeling this story will change hour by hour for a LONG time! :shakehead:

Thanks for the link. I'll check it out. I keep hoping this doesn't destroy future diving in this area. Sorry for my tone earlier, but I'm just aggravated about the situation and I don't even have to live around it. Some of you will be impacted greatly by this. BP owes you guys big time.

How can BP close it?

NOAA or the Coast Guard maybe... but what gives BP the authority?

I kind of wondered that myself but I was going on the same trip as Tstormdiver and got the same call.

I did read that the oil sheen was only 9 miles S/W of Pensacola and moving east. At least the trip got called before we made the 10 hour drive.
