I'd second Sunbreeze - good value and central - always hear good things about Protech - never dived with them, i tend to dive with Amigos del Mar - really good. Have good boats and DM's never been disappointed.
Have a good trip

A quick note for someone who might want to do a referral on Ambergris, I will never forget Sylvan Sr. Last name is Forman, I think he works out of Coral Beach, but may only do requests. Small boat, nearly one on one instruction. Very patient and very knowledgable. According to some of the other DM's, he trained nearly all of the Local DM's on the Island.
We did our advanced with him a couple of years ago.
Great Guy.

We were just on Ambergris. We didn't dive with Protech, but we did get some nitrox from them (they are currently the only ones on the caye with nitrox - soon to change). They do have the only shop there that you can purchase gear, replacement parts, etc, but being the only ones, they're a little pricey. We dove with Aquadives (part of the package) and had a pretty good experience. Our only complaint was the groups were a little too crowded. Protech claims to assign no more than 6 divers per DM.

I can't think of anything in Protech's shop that isn't at or below the USA recommended retail price. That's despite the very high importation costs (freight & duty) we have. You may well find cheaper at internet shops, but that's a problem in the USA and worldwide, not just in Belize.

Our experience is that none of the shops that buy nitrox for their diver customers are prepared even to invest a few hundred dollars in an oxygen analyser for those divers to use. As we've stopped loaning one of ours (they get mistreated and fail early) those divers who want to know what they're breathing (amazingly, some don't seem to bother) have to come to our dock to get it. So who's going to invest the 6 figure sum needed to produce it properly?

Oh, and yes - our dive groups are only more than 6 when the divers request it.

I realize Belize has high import costs. My experience when browsing the shop and with a friend who made a purchase there was that the prices were a little higher than what we are used to at our local shops. I didn't mean to imply you are trying to rip anyone off. I just posted an observation I made.

As for the nitrox competition - I heard about that from one of your employees. I didn't ask which dive op was doing it. I was just told that it was in the process and there would soon be competition.

I didn't see any problems in my limited interaction with Protech. In fact, if I were to ever return to Ambergris, I would be inclined to dive with Protech. I received great service when I rented pony bottles there. And the fact that you have the experience of supplying nitrox, can accomodate more than the average recreation diver, and dive small groups are all appealing.

I guess I should have been a little more detailed in my original post. Didn't mean to offend. :sorry19z:

As for accomodations, it depends on what you want. There are a lot of nice places to stay on the caye. We stayed at AquaMarina Suites and really enjoyed it. The selling factor there was the kitchen in the 1 bedroom suites. We shopped at the local groceries and ate breakfast and lunch in the suite every day. A lot more convenient than trying to find somewhere to eat right before and right after diving. By the time we finished our 2nd dive each day it was around 1230-1pm. Throw a shower in there and lunch would have been at 2 or 3 otherwise. We then ate dinner out.

No matter where you stay though, the dive ops will usually pick you up right on the dock outside your resort every morning and drop you off there every afternoon. Hank pretty much hit in on the head with the description of the diving. Do request Victoria Canyons and Eagle Ray Alley. That's where we saw the most marine life - nurse sharks, spotted eagle rays, and sea turtles.

Thanks for the info. Going to stay at SunBreeze. I've been to Turks, Roatan, Cozumel, Playa del Carman, Grand Cayman. Just wanted to go somewhere new.

Don't forget to post a trip report when you get back.

I just go back yesterday. What a great time! I dove mostly with Amigos Del Mar . I did alost of research and everyone loved them. I can now vouch for this. They go over everything with everyone before each dive. if conditions are not good they go to a different ive site. We Did Turneffe (Elbow, Calabash and Vincente) and the Blue Hole which includes Half Moon Caye and the Aquarium. The conditions were lousy so we could not do the Aquarium so wedove West Point which was also good. We did one dive, Hol Chan Marinepark, with Ambergris Divers. They were nice but the experience with the fun crewat Amigos Del Mar was the best. They even passed out Snickers and Rum on the way home ;)

If you decde to to Turneffe or the Blue hole be ready for a good 1 1\2 - 2 hour ride sometimes through rough open seas.

We stayed at the North end of the island at he Belizian Shores resort. They are really nice condos. Getting into town can be a chore though. You can either take a ater taxi in which leaves every even hour or you could rent a golf cart like most people and drive the bumpy road in. When taking the golf cart from the north end of the island you also need to cross 30 feet over a river on a hand pulled ferry that the locals run.

All in all its a great trip.

Sorry to see you had to miss the Aquarium. That was one of our better dives. I haven't dove West Point, though, so I can't compare.

Did you have to help pull the ferry, too? They had a young kid on when we went across and I think he'd been working most of the day already.

They had two guys pulling it. We returned the cart after one day though. The road was too bumpy for us. It seemed that by he time we got home after getting up at 5am to go on our dives we were too tired to go into town anyway.

One thing I highly suggest is bringing money for TShirts. They have some of the best dive t-Shirts in the Airport on the way home lol.
