How is the diving? Relative to .....????. It's 78-82 or so degree water and usually pretty clear. 40-80 feet vis. It has a bottom of cuts and grooves which end at about 80 feet at a slope which goes down to about 150 feet or so to a deep wall drop off. Lots of swim throughs. Not as much fish life as other parts of Belize or the Caribbean. The nice thing is the reef is only about a quarter mile off the beach and you get there in minutes.
You have access to Turneffe Atholl with the Elbow, which is a great dive in my opinion. Blue water and lots of fish. Lighthouse reef is farther out with the Blue Hole.
Lots of places to stay in San Pedro. Lots of restaurants and bars. Lots of dive shops.

Try ProTech Belize. They are great people. They can support anyone from the beginning diver up to re-breather folk, and technical divers. They can also help with arranging accomodations.

Try them at:

Hi there and welcome to ScubaBoard!

Ronnie and his crew are fun to dive with and run a safe operation. Thier rental equipment was great too and he has the best, maybe the only, place to buy gear, nitrox supplier for the island I think. If you don't do an overnight trip to the Blue Hole, do the day trip with Ramon's. Protech had an overnight boat on order last time I was there, Not sure if he has it yet though.

Accomodations - Protech is located at the yacht club, very nice, condo style with a pool, and quiet. Downtown there is the Sea Breeze. A clean looking place the we decided we would try on our next trip. Ramon's is on the pricey end for me, but very nice if your in that price range.

Feel free to PM me if you have a question.

We were just on Ambergris. We didn't dive with Protech, but we did get some nitrox from them (they are currently the only ones on the caye with nitrox - soon to change). They do have the only shop there that you can purchase gear, replacement parts, etc, but being the only ones, they're a little pricey. We dove with Aquadives (part of the package) and had a pretty good experience. Our only complaint was the groups were a little too crowded. Protech claims to assign no more than 6 divers per DM.

As for accomodations, it depends on what you want. There are a lot of nice places to stay on the caye. We stayed at AquaMarina Suites and really enjoyed it. The selling factor there was the kitchen in the 1 bedroom suites. We shopped at the local groceries and ate breakfast and lunch in the suite every day. A lot more convenient than trying to find somewhere to eat right before and right after diving. By the time we finished our 2nd dive each day it was around 1230-1pm. Throw a shower in there and lunch would have been at 2 or 3 otherwise. We then ate dinner out.

No matter where you stay though, the dive ops will usually pick you up right on the dock outside your resort every morning and drop you off there every afternoon. Hank pretty much hit in on the head with the description of the diving. Do request Victoria Canyons and Eagle Ray Alley. That's where we saw the most marine life - nurse sharks, spotted eagle rays, and sea turtles.
