Planning to be in New Orleans on business in May, and wondered if there is anywhere within reach where I could spend a day diving....oil rigs sound great, but how do you get there ? Any suggestions ?

FredT:
Check on diving out of Venice or Empire, La. It's a fair drive south but a short run to good rigs. Capt Troy out of Venice comes highly recommended. There are several threads with his contact info on http://spearboard.com.

Is this a day trip out of New Orleans, or something more.... ?
I am hearing that these oil rigs are 40 miles off the coast.

It depends on where you leave the dock.
Venice is as far down the river as you can go with wheels on the east bank. Empire has the same honor on the west bank. From Venice 800' of water is 12 miles away, It's considerably farther off the west bank but good diving is available within 30 miles or so.

OTOH if departing Gulfport 300' of water is almost 100 miles out. Most trips to the rigs are day trips, even out of Gulfport.

The posts regarding Venice and Empire are good ones. Some New Orleans shops (try Harry's at (504) 888-4882) dive out of Fourchon, which is closer to New Orleans. However, Fourchon diving means diving in the S. Timbalier block, where the boat run is 30-40 miles to rigs in 150+' of water. All diving in May is problematic due to weather and a heavy surface murky layer caused by the Mississippi River and Atchafalaya Basin run off.
