Always happy to dive the "Pelham Keys," time permitting... Let me know when you plan on going...

Thanks, BKP. It will probably be in a couple of weeks from this Sat. as it looks right now. I appreciate the info. you have given so far about where things are there. I like the fact that the school bus has a buoy with a descent line on it to follow down to the bus. That makes things easier on everybody. I'm looking forward to getting into some decent vis this side of the Gulf.

Thanks for the lone of the 7 mill but I'm a small. I will look for a used 7 on the net. I have some old ones but they are stiff. Are all 7 mills stiff??? Or I could just not go so deep I guess. My son Danny really has a hard time with the cold. He has no fat on his body so he gets cold fast. He wears two 3 mills and still gets cold fast. He will just have to tough it out. I really don’t have any plans so I guess what ever works for you and BKP if he's up for it. Danny and I are up for anything that’s not 400 miles away.

Sounds like fun to me. 

Stiltwalker, BKP wears a 5mm suit when he goes to Pelham in Alabama, so you could probably be OK. I wear a 7mm and bought a drysuit because I really don't like cold water at all.
Yes, my 7mm can be stiff as well to put on because it's pretty thick. One thing that I learned is to get a diving skin, a one piece lyra spandex jumpsuit. It's very thin. The wetsuit will just slide right on with one of those underneath it. They cost about 30-$35.
Here is the website for this place. www.divealabama.com As you can see there some cool stuff to see and great vis most of the time. At least alot better than Lanier.
I'm thinking of maybe the 16th of this month. That Sat., You and I and Danny and BKP could drive over to the site. Leave Atlanta about 7:00.am. and be in the water by 9:30 or 10:00 at the latest.

Stilt, I'm cold-natured myself, and like your son, I get cold easily and don't like it. If I were to stay above the 1st thermocline at Pelham, which is between 20 and 25 feet, even a 3mm is fine for me (you'll be above 78 degrees, usually in the 80s, the entire time). I wear the 5mm because I do drop below the 1st thermo (which we do here and there, depending on what part of the quarry we want to play in). It's always easier to flood the 5mm with water if I'm too warm, than try to warm up with a 3mm, if too cold. My 5mm is a Hyperstretch, which isn't even as thermally sound as a non super-stretch 5mm (but wow, it's comfortable!).

The only time I'd really find a 7mm necessary (and then some) is dropping below 70ft. or so. I've been down to the low 50's at 120 feet, at Pelham, and I simply don't go there unless there's a good reason (really not much to do at that depth there, other than just going to take a look, or do your AOW cert deep dive -- the viz does go up dramatically at around 100 to 110 feet, however, again, just not anything to see).

A hood also helps tremendously if you're cold natured (and if I know I'm going down to the bus, at 65 to 70 feet, which is actually just beyond the 2nd thermocline, I'll always wear my hood).

So, I find the 5mm a good all-around thickness for the quarries. It's much more comfortable than a 7mm (which can be a bit stiff and confining... at least for me).

Thanks for the insight, BKP. I knew if anybody knew Pelham well , it would be you. I also appreciate the info. you gave me about the school bus at Blue Water.
My 7mm one piece is a real stretchy neoprene material called TEC FLEX(not Hyperstretch, but close). I got it at Divers Supply last year. It still can be a little tough to get on sometimes, even with the dive skin underneath. I have a 2mm shorty that is super flexible of course, but only used for diving in the Gulf during the summer, not much good for waters cooler than the mid 70s.
I have a Henderson Hyperstretch 7mm hood that I used back in June before my drysuit got in. My head was nice and toasty in Lanier. It's been so hot the last two dives I've made with my new dry suit, I haven't even yet worn the 7mm hood that came with it. I know that will change when I get over to Pelham. Looking forward to it soon.

The best thing I have found to wiggle into a stiff wetsuit is cheap dollar store hair conditioner, also helps on the getting out of also. I am ready to go over to Pelham again, very nice dive and good visibility.

Heading out today (Friday)
