Will be in Portugal May 7-21/10. Wondering about diving in certain areas. Will be in the Algarve for a week, Lisbon for four days and Porto for four days. Do I bring my gear from Canada? Is it worth it to dive in any of these locations at all?If so what type of things can a person expect to see? As well whay about dive shops? Thanks Brad

Unfortunately I do not have an answer for you yet. I am wondering the same thing. What happened? Did you dive at all while there?

Thanks for that I just noticed I put in the wrong dates. Maybe thats why no replies. Thanks

So I guess you haven't gone very far in getting some info about diving in Portugal...
I am planning to be in Portugal probably at the same time that you are going to be there. I will be visiting my sister whom I haven't seen in years. She lives near Porto but unfortunately she is not a scubadiver so I will have to do some research myself to find out what kind of options are available. I have an old copy of Lonely Planet guide to Portugal. The author mentions scubadiving very briefly. It seems to me that most, if not all, is done in the southern part of the country, the Algarve.

(What's going with my avatar picture! Everytime I go somewhere else on Scubaboard it changes to an image that I did not pick. Is it yours like that too?)

Cheers

not sure if it helps, but you can dive in sesimbra, near lisbon (around 40km), and in porto santo (near madeira island).

also in the berlengas, a bit north from lisbon near peniche, and a bunch of other places.

for sesimbra diving you can contact nautilus-sub (Nautilus-Sub : A mais antiga e maior escola internacional de mergulho em Portugal), they'll be sure to help you, and might even provide info on other places.
if you go to the islands, try porto santo sub (:::porto Santo Sub - Mergulho em Porto Santo - Mergulho em Portugal), there's a wreck there that is supposed to be cool (never been there myself).

edit: there's a thread on the next page with more detailed info on this subject: http://www.scubaboard.com/forums/western-europe/322497-diving-portugal.html

You can dive almost every place in Portugal.

The main spots in continental Portugal are in Sesimbra, Berlengas (Peniche), Algarve (Sagres, Portimão, Armação de Pera, Albufeira, Faro e Tavira) and Oporto...

The Portuguese islands, Madeira, Porto Santo and the Azores are superb!

You will find dive center in all these locations.

You have lots of information here:

Lista de Centros, Escolas e Lojas de Mergulho em Portugal ::::....... Frum de Mergulho

It's in Portuguese, but you will understand and search using the map... The contacts are there, including the dive centers websites, most of them with english versions available.

I leave you a video made last week in Azores...

Enjoy! :)
