I am going to LA March 18th for a week, anyone have any suggestions for a good shop to dive out of? or sites to hit?

Thanks Julian

By LA, do you mean Los Angeles? If so, you might want to ask a moderator to move this thread to the SoCal forum -- you'll get plenty of input there.

Julian, as kelpmermaid said, if LA mean LosAngeles, CA or ? please let us know... and what area of LA will you be staying? Check out : http://www.scubaboard.com/forums/socal Let us know and we will help you enjoy our waters/

A lot of it depends on what kind of diving you want to do. If you want to do some shore diving, there are plenty sites in the immediate area that are great. However, if you want to do some boat diving, there are also a lot of great options. If you're interested in Catalina, there's the underwater park at Casino Point that gives you an easy shore dive with lots of variety (lots of different things to look at, and a huge number of profile options....from 90+ feet to 60 feet to 30 feet).

Narrow down what you're looking to do and we can give you a better idea of what your best options would be. Are you only in town for the one day? If you're in town over the weekend as well, there's a better chance that you could meet up with some of the locals and have them show you around.

If you only have one day for diving, I would recommend trying to get out to Catalina. You can take the Express boat out of Long Beach and dive Casino Point or you can take a number of dive boats leaving out of the La/LongBeach Harbor.
Here's a good directory for boats: California Diving News - Dive Trips - Search
A Great Sticky for anyone thinking about traveling to Catalina: http://www.scubaboard.com/forums/socal/231885-updated-great-catalina-island-info-sticky-thread.html

Now if you want to dive the mainland, visibility and swell are much more unpredictable, but there are some great spots to try. On the Palos Verdes Peninsula, one of the most favorite sites to dive would be Old Marineland. Here's a good post that explains a lot about the dive site: http://www.scubaboard.com/forums/socal/269828-back-marineland-non-dive-report.html
If you have access to car while your here, you might want to drive down to Laguna Beach, which has tons of great dive sites. Shaw's Cove is one of my favorites. Here's some good info on the spot: Scuba Shore Diving Site Page for: Shaws Cove of California South, USA West and a video I made from my first dive there: YouTube - Shaw's Cove Winter Diving 1.13.09

There is a good chance I can make it out for something. Keep us updated on the times you will be available etc. Also, will you be bringing your own gear or will you need to borrow/rent it? Your going to like our 'warm' water!

If you're going to be near the Beverly Hills area, then Eco Dive Center would probably be the easiest to get to and rent gears.

I will be in town on the 18th-25th, I will have a car and will be bringing all my gear except weights and tanks. I would love to meet up with someone on the weekend or Friday. I have a DUI drysuit, do I need it or is a wetsuit fine?
