I've never considered diving there either. It's only about 10' deep and usually has visibility measured in inches from all the bird poop. The end by the bridge gets some flushing through a shallow channel that has some current-y invertebrates like encrusting sponges and even some hydrocoral, but unless you go at high tide, it's probably even too shallow to snorkel. As far as the fresh water flowing in from a couple of streams, fresh water is toxic to marine life so the lower salinity probably results in limited diversity. The outside of the lagoon off the beach used to be a popular spot for divers who lived in the area for catching crabs. I tagged along once and it's a long swim to get to 30' deep, where most of the crabs were. The commercial crab boats used to scream at the divers, assuming that they were raiding their traps, which were out in that area.
