I went diving at South Monastery and the Metridium Fields today. Both were really neat dives. Vis was 20 feet at South Monastery and about 35-40 at the Metridium Fields. South Monastery had a lot of interesting fish and anemones. I saw lots of rock fish, a few kelp greenlings, a ling cod or two, lots of Bay Gobies and Blackeye Gobies and a big school of tube snouts.

On the second dive at the Metridium Fields, I saw lots of oddities. First going down the pipe, I come across this sock on the pipe...Only the sock is moving, not down but along the pipe. Come to find out that some crab had decided to "decorate" himself with the sock. Then I saw something that looked like a bowl of snot that someone got very artsy with (very weird looking creature) along the pipe. If anyone can help me identify it, I would be most appreciative.

Next we actually saw a shark at the Metridium Fields!!! No, no, not that one, we saw what was either a swell shark or a leopard shark. The lady at the Bamboo Reef said it was a Leopard shark, but she's going off the pattern of the sharks skin. I actually think it was a swell shark or another type of cat shark because the dorsal fin was way too far back for the leopard shark and the behavior didn't match a leopard sharks behavior. I compared the two sharks and I still think it's a swell shark or something of the like and not a leopard shark. Maybe I should just name it a Jaguar shark and be done with it. :) Zissou would be proud....;) Both dives were really neat. So I can't say no shark today....However, I would much rather see this kind up close than the Great big White kind. :)

Awesome report, thanks! Vis at Lover's was 20-30' today in the morning, probably somewhat between what you saw at Monastery and BW. It got a bit surgey, though, and vis went downhill for the second tank. Saw a big foot-long mollusc and posted a description in the critter ID forum for anyone that's interested. Todd

I was tired and falling asleep when I did this. :) Fixed. That was one big nudibranch then. Any thoughts on the shark?
