Re OP: Sounds like sloppy journalism. I cannot think that I have ever read a professional recommendation not to dive after 50.

yea probably just the personal opinion of the writer

Donald Sutherland may just be a junkie or coke freak or alcoholic Hollywood bozo. He probably stayed up all night the night before drinking, and thought since he's some Hollywood star, the rules of diving didn't apply to him.
I turn 50 this summer. I just started diving, and am working to become an instructor. If you're in good shape and have common sense, can follow instructions, and take care of yourself, it does not matter how old you are- That is with your doctors OK first! Go Dive!

Never saw him very active in any of his movies, maybe his lung was due to split regardless.

I don't remember where, but i read somewhere that the full quote was something like with your medical history you should not have been diving past 50. It was refferring specifically to DS.

Of course I could be wrong, physicians make dumb statements like that all the time, which is why you want to see a doc that knows about diving, as even our medical proffesionals are not immune to predjudices.

If you are healthy and smart diving is for you, regardless of how old you get...

Has anybody considered trying to find out who this doctor is, and referring him to DAN? Also the doctor of the DM on the film? Maybe every doctor in Hollywood?

I agree with the "sloppy journalism" .The whole article sounds really screwy. From a nursing point of view, most of it just doesn't make sense.:shakehead:

Just read the article in Cyber Diver about Donald Sutherland bursting a blood vessel in his lungs while diving for his new movie. The article indicates that diving after fifty is not recommended. Can anyone fill me in on this?

That article is complete hogwash. I'm 56 and going strong with no plans to quit! :palmtree: Bob

I didn't even realize 50 was old till I saw this thread. I thought we boomers were claiming that 50 is the new 40.

I dove with a guy last week in Coz that was turning 76 the next day. I had no idea until he told me. I am shooting for 100.

IMHO it wasn’t the diving that caused his problem but his overall physical condition and a doctor looking for something to blame it on.
Gary D.

It's like they all expect that we're never going to die.

Like doesn't it ever strike you as funny when you see the Viagra and Cialis commericials and they say, "ask your Dr. if you are in good enough condition to be having sex." Like what red-blooded male is going to care whether or not he's in shape enough when presented the option?

I wonder if Hef asks his Dr that on his visits and takes his advice??

Like isn't dying with a permnent woody every man's dream?:D

I think that we all have to accept that over even our 40's our risk factors for health issues increase dramaticatically no matter what activity we engage in!

I think we all remember when 40 was old too
Heck I can remember thinking 21 was "over the hill"
When you get there.. (past 50), it isn't at all what you thought it would be like.
