Divers Alert Network donates Analox gas analyzers to Scuba operations in Mexico - National scuba diving | Examiner.com

Contaminated breathing gas is a potential hazard of which every diver is aware. Breathing gas with high levels of carbon monoxide (CO) is of special concern, as the difficulty in detecting it can be a potentially fatal problem. Divers Alert Network® (DAN®) and Analox Sensor Technology have teamed up to help provide a solution by donating an Analox CO Clear Carbon Monoxide Alarm (CO Clear™) to 10 dive operators in Cozumel, Mexico.
“Countless numbers of divers travel to Cozumel each year to enjoy the exceptional diving the region offers,” said William M. Ziefle, president and CEO of DAN Holdings. “DAN wanted to ensure those divers have measures in place to help them stay safe. The best way we can do that is to provide resources to the dive operators who work hard to keep a focus on diver safety.”
Several gases can cause the contamination of breathing gas, but carbon monoxide is especially problematic as it is colorless, odorless, tasteless and virtually impossible to detect without the assistance of sensors. Its danger manifests when carbon monoxide binds with hemoglobin, essentially blocking oxygen from doing the same and reducing the blood’s ability to carry oxygen throughout the body. Symptoms of CO poisoning include headache, dizziness, weakness, nausea, vomiting, chest pain and confusion, with loss of consciousness and death possible when exposed to higher levels. The dangers of these symptoms are increased when symptoms present underwater.
The CO Clear is a fixed carbon monoxide alarm that monitors for high levels of carbon monoxide from diving compressors. With visual and audible alarm warnings to rising CO levels, the CO Clear is both easy to use and cost effective. This wall-mounted analyzer is designed to provide continuous ‘on line’ monitoring for the presence of CO in breathing air compressor lines.
WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN A GAS ANALYZER

“The goal of this initiative is not to help detect contaminated air in tanks, but to prevent contaminated air from ever reaching the tanks in the first place,” said Ziefle. “So many solutions lie in prevention. DAN’s mission is as much about that as it is about assisting when an emergency does occur. We are very happy to be able to provide these carbon monoxide alarms and help keep contaminated air from being a threat to divers. We are grateful to Analox for helping us make this happen.”
The final list of dive operators receiving the donated alarms is still being finalized, but DAN expects to have all alarms delivered in January 2012.

This is great news, and a major step forward for diver safety. Thank you to all involved. Thanks to DAN for being proactive and doing what needed to be done. This is really great news and just the beginning of a new level of diver safety.

I saw this on FB today. :thumb: I'll keep testing all of my tanks and avoid a false feeling of security, but still - this is great. :medal:

That's great, but which shops are getting them? There are a lot of dive operators and boats on the island. My guess would be they're going to the bigger operations who put the most divers in the water daily?

The CO analyzers they are describing are fixed mount and would only apply to those shops that have their own compressor. We at Aldora have already gotten those in line CO monitors for the major fill station that we use, Meridiano.

Kudos, DAN & Analox. You both ROCK!

As Dave said, these are not portable analyzers that will be on the boats, they will only be going to the shops with compressors, which are large shops and very few. Dave or someone else feel free to correct me if I leave anyone off the list:

Shops with their own compressors:
Sand Dollar
Dressel Divers
Del Mar Aquatics
Dive Palancar
