Subject: DIVERS ALERT NETWORK anyone? DAN D.A.N. D A N

I am considering getting a DAN membership and purchasing either the preferred or the master plan. What has been your experience when you needed DAN? What about the extras they can sell you with it like DAN tag "Divings only Medical ID" or The trip insurance?

Thanks for all comments.

I have the DAN Master Plan. Since I travel out of the country to do expedition-style diving, I consider it money well spent. Of course, as with all insurance, especially of this type, I hope I never have to use it!

Chambers are NOT cheap, and Air Ambulances are just out of this world in terms of cost!

So I live in Tennessee if I tear my leg open in the water at the quarry which is 15 miles from my house what does DAN do for me? What if the same thing happens in Key West what does DAN do for me?

If you need a decompression ride...DAN covers it. Check out how much those cost by the hour. Plus...they are available to members for questions of any kind. Its like any other insurance.... you dont need it ....until you need it....then its too late if you dont have it.

Im cheap ...and I have it.

a question if i have military insurance ...witch is a free ride more less would i need Dan also i will never be diving out side the country and for a while i parable never go below 40-60 feet still new and want to get my comfort level up

Are you talking active duty or TRICARE??? The later covers absolutely nothing...its the worse HMO in existance. I know..I have it.

If you are active duty Im not sure what that covers in the way of a chamber ride. And, I bet trying to find our from people on post will be fun!!!!

And, you dont have to go 100+ ft to experience DCS.

The standard DAN membership includes 100,000 coverage for emer. evacuation. [Edited out] ..."if you are more than 50 miles from home"... I just found out it covers you 0 miles from home too [/Edit]
The Dive Accident Insurance, that you can get , has no minimum miles from home clause
The Trip Insurance is only for injury or illness cancellations
Dive Equipment Insurance is only for a loss during a covered dive accident

I am a DAN member because of the support to divers and the research they do and would rather give them the money than an insurance company
I have the Master Insurance plan because it's a good compromise (can upgrade to Prefered at any time, will do so for a big trip)

You can still get bent at 40 to 60 feet..... it's just less likely than if you were at 100.

Brandon,

If you cut your leg in the water, your best option is your primary health insurance. DAN's primary purpose is to offer chamber and airlift insurance, which your primary may not cover (or cover completely). DAN has other benefits, such as helping you locate a dive-knowlegable physician, which there may not be an abundance of in TN. It's pretty cheap for the peace of mine of knowing that you won't have hundreds of thousands in debt in the event of an emergency. Just be careful when selecting an insurance plan, as the different levels have depth restrictions.

Everyone needs primary health insurance. This will cover your minor diving injuries, cuts, bangs, bruises, sprains, ear infections, maybe even a trip to an ENT specialist, etc.

Every diver should have DAN (or other) Decompression/Evacuation insurance to cover a major diving accident, evacuation, and major trip altering plans needed. Many health insurances will end up covering the chamber portion, but DAN handles the red tape and you won't have to pay any (or very very little) out of pocket up front.

For $100/yr, you can get a DAN membership and the highest level of coverage. Cheap insurance!
