Better than the DSS wing you pictured and I am done this time--bye Tobin.

Oh I see you like your wing better than a wing you have never used, and if we are to believe your first post have never seen either.

What value is a blanket declaration of "best" from someone who has not used but one of the choices?

Let me be clear here. It is perfectly reasonable for any poster to relate their experiences with goods they have actually used.

What is not helpful, to anybody in this community, is "comparative" opinions from people who have not used all the goods they "ranking"

Have you used it yet? If not, can you return it?

Not a huge deal, but speaking as someone who put about 100 dives (singles and doubles) on a Rec Wing before switching to a Mach V for singles and a Halcyon Evolve for doubles I can tell you that the DR Rec Wing isn't great for a single tank (taco effect) and not great for diving steel doubles (not really enough lift.)

I too bought the DR thinking I would save money by getting one wing to work for both singles and doubles. But in the end, since I wound up buying a dedicate singles wing and a dedicated doubles wing anyway, buying the DR wound up costing me $270 MORE!

Thanks RJP and everyone else who responded.

No it is not too late to return the wing, I got it from LeisurePro and they have a good returns policy.

My only issue is that if I was to go with the best single wings (according to consensus on this and other boards) - Oxycheq or DSS, I will pay an additional USD 180 (or thereabouts) for a new wing plus STA plus shipping (USD 80 to Australia).

Am I prepared to pay an extra $180 now, having only 13 dives under my belt? Don't think so. I don't think that with my current level of experience I will notice a huge difference between the super taco you guys describe with the rec wing and streamlined Oxy/DSS wings. I don't know, I could be wrong here?

I'm thinking I will dive the rec wing for now and then aim to get an Oxy or DSS wing when I get my regs - that way I won't waste the postage cost on just getting a replacement wing.

Money isn't an issue for me, but wasting it is. I am regretting making the wrong decision with the rec wing, but it will be a valuable lesson for me when picking gear!

If you don't have many dives under your belt, I would say you might be smart to pick a wing that is easier to dive with :) Plus if yo use it, can you return it?

You can always look out for a used wing, and then sell your recwing too.

Also, you might check out Scubatoys. I know there are other shops that sponsor SB, but ST has their own forum, and if you post there, you actually get a gift certificate! ($10 for 10 posts, $50 after 250 posts.) They will usually match or beat anyone and everyone.

Anyways....Tobin, I think mostly people are tired of manufacturers coming around dogging everyone who doesn't rave about their product. :) You make a point but I think we get tired of you making it. Not that your products aren't top notch, though.

I have no problem with people who use and enjoy and promote competitive products, I want divers to enjoy diving.

There is a difference between stating "XX is the best" and "XX is the best I've ever used" To often we see the first, when the second is true.

Not that your products aren't top notch, though.

Thank you.

I'm sorry you're not happy with your choice. A fellas first BP/wing should be a joyous occasion! Its still possible that you might like the one you have... so don't get too down. ;)

What wing would you reccomend then for singles?

I gotta agree with Nem and RJ... the Mach V is a killer wing. It's my favorite... and I HAVE HAD most of the popular wings... INCLUDING the Torus. I haven't had any DR stuff but IMHO the Mach V is slicker than the rec and venture wings. (I hope Lamar doesn't come by and blast me for giving a "comparative opinion" on a product that I haven't used! :shakehead:)

There are other very nice single tank wings that you might prefer or that might be easier for you to get... Halcyon, Golem, Agir... just to name a few. I'm pretty sure that you would be very happy with any of these.

If you want to know more on why I prefer the Mach V shoot me a PM.

I had my Rec Wing out about a month ago and used it as I had just moved and it had the clear advantage of being unpacked.

It made a major impression on me as to how difficult it was to maintain precise bouyancy and to stay in perfect trim compared to my Pioneer wing (an older version of the Halcyon Evolve). It was work for me with over 20 years and over 1000 dives, and it is not something I would wish on a new diver.

It's like mastering any other skill and I hear the same argument in other sports. A new competitive shooter for example may not (yet) be able to shoot as well as their pistol or rifle, but when they miss you know exactly where the problem is if they are shooting an extremely accurate weapon rather than a cheaper but less accurate substitute. In my opinion, because of that they can improve their shooting skills at a much faster rate. And in the end, if they stay with the sport, they will eventually buy the same excellent rifle or pistol anyway and would have been money ahead to have done it in the first place. If they do not stay in the sport, the top of the line competition rifle or pistol has a better resale value (as a percentage of retail price paid) anyway and they will spend less all said and done than if they bought a cheap rifle or pistol and sell it as used later. Plus, more importantly, with a better firearm, they are far more likely to experience success and positive results for their time, money and effort and are more likely to stay in the sport.

The same argument applies to diving where a more suitable wing will probably increase your enjoyment, make the learning curve a bit less steep and improve the ods that you will stay in the sport and continue to expand both your comfort zone and your abilites.

Buy the best and you only have to buy it once - that was advice I got from my incredibly frugal accountant mother and it tuned out to be pretty good advice.

I've tried a recwing with singles and generally find it too big even for a 15l steel.
Too much wrap and flap everywhere from it. Its definitely a small twinset wing not a single wing. I was uncomfortable using it on a single tank and had to struggle to dump and trim.

Although it may do singles as well as doubles it doesn't do singles very well.

A 30lb wing (absolute max 40) is fine for singles and more than adequate.

Or if you want a "dual purpose" wing, consider bungeed wings as these at least has less of a wrap issue.
