My only issue is that if I was to go with the best single wings (according to consensus on this and other boards) - Oxycheq or DSS, I will pay an additional USD 180 (or thereabouts) for a new wing plus STA plus shipping (USD 80 to Australia).

I don't get the "additional USD 180". Your LP wing cost about 265... right? You can get a Mach V from Golem Gear for 280... Golem Gear, Inc. - Oxycheq Mach V Signature Series Single Wing
Or if you prefer, I bet you could get a similar price from ScubaToys.

Or... here's a beauty... and the absolute BEST DEAL that I could find this morning... an Oxy 30# Sig Series for just $225! How can you beat that one? The Oxy Sig Series is a FANTASTIC wing.

Or... you could pick up a very nice H Eclipse here on SB in the classified forum. Excellent, pre-owned Eclipses generally go for around $200. I believe that there is still a Pioneer for sale on TDS for $175.

Any of these wings would be great... and NONE of them will taco.

You will probably loose your postage with LP but you could cut your losses buy buying one these wings that you can find for less.

To be sure that any of these wings would work with your DR plate you might have to get an STA. But... you should have one anyways... right?

I broke down last night and got the Mach V. Will send the rec wing back to LP. Anyone want to buy a lovely red dual purpose wing? I figured my learning will be made a lot easier by using the right equipment and not having to fight drag, poor trim, problems dumping air, etc.

The postage to AU is a killer, but with what our dollar is doing, the US prices are an absolute steal.

Just for comparison - a rec wing on its own costs USD 575 here in AU, this is the standard importer's price.

Now I just hope ScubaToys ship my order ASAP in time for the weekend

I think you'll be very happy with the Mach V. It is a vastly superior choice than getting a "compromise" wing that claims to work with doubles and singles (and does neither very well). Here's another Mach V pic to keep you going until you get yours:

Save yourselves some grief and buy dedicated doubles wings for doubles and dedicated singles wings for singles!
