Does anyone have photos like that of the rec wing taco - so I can see how bad it really is?
dk,
The issue here isn't really "how bad is your wing" but rather what are you missing.
It is quite possible to dive a single tank with the wing you have, and by snugging up the bands you will reduce the tank wrap or taco.
That however won't match the ease of use of a dedicated, narrow profile singles wing. You will be missing out on some of the very reasons you purchased a BP&W for in the first place.
This is particularly true for the newer diver, or new user of a BP&W, Divers well acquainted with a BP&W who might need to limit the amount of baggage on a trip for example might make the very reasonable choice to pack only one wing to use with both singles and doubles, but they already know what the limitations of such an approach will be.
I always recommend the new BP&W diver start with a wing that is optimized for the diveing they are doing now, not what they might do in the future.
Remember the transition to doubles involves many $1000 of dollars worth of gear, couple set of doubles, dry suit, 4-5 reg sets deco bottles, training etc. The cost of a second "doubles only" wing is a tiny part of that.
In addition when it comes times for doubles there is some chance that your current wing may not be the answer for doubles either. Suit buoyancy, tank choice, trim issues can all play part in selecting a doubles wing, and these are likely unknowns for you now.
Good luck,
Tobin
