I just heard on the news that a diver died this morning while on the HMCS Mackenzie. Apparently one other diver was taken to Vancouver for treatment. More details to follow.

Condolences to all affected by this tragedy.

Do you know what charter the diver was diving off of?

This is really sad news. Thanks for the post Sean.
My condolences go out the friends and family of the victim and prayers that the injured diver is alright

I don't know what charter, if any, was involved. I can't remember all of the details on the news and won't speculate on what I am not certain was said. I believe the injured diver was taken to Sidney Spit via boat where a helicopter could take them to Vancouver. The news footage also showned a clip of a BC/tank assembly being brought onto a dock. The tank was a rental but I will not post the source out of respect for the victims and the likelyhood that the tank itself wasn't directly involved.

I was working in Sidney at the time of the incident and know from a reliable source that there were ambulances at the Tulista park boat launch.

Very sad news, during summer already hit with way too many diving fatalities in and around Vancouver Island.

I saw the news report as well. DSDO...dive safe dive often everyone.

My condolences to anyone affected by this.

Diver dies exploring sunken navy ship A second diver was flown to Vancouver for medical treatment after incident
Times Colonist staff:

One scuba diver is dead and a second has been flown to Vancouver for medical treatment after an accident off Gooch Island, seven kilometres east of Sidney, on Sunday. An urgent call came to the Rescue Co-ordination Centre at 11:30 a.m. from someone on the dive boat, who said two divers in trouble had just surfaced after diving on the wreck Mackenzie. One was unconscious and the second was out of breath. The centre co-ordinated the marine response and arranged a helicopter to pick up one diver at Sidney Spit. The second diver was declared dead by emergency staff on the helicopter. Sidney RCMP are investigating the incident. The names of the two divers were not available. The Mackenzie, an old Canadian Navy destroyer escort, was sunk in 1995 by the Artificial Reef Society of B.C. in water about 30 metres deep.

Oh no. Let us know what you find out when you get a chance... What's up this year?

I'm a bit unclear on this. Is it saying that both divers died or both were taken to Sidney Spit where one was declared dead by helicopter paramedics and the other was taken in the helicopter for treatment?

The situation sounds awful either way...

This is TC published, sorry that all that I know.
Hopefully we can get better information soon.
