There was only one person with the same build, hair, mask, wetsuit and gear config. And the camera stayed on his face for several seconds. I didn't catch it the first time either because I was just watching for the dive portion, but once you start wondering if he shows up in the boat scene at the beginning, it sticks out like a sore thumb. I'm just glad the OP didn't draw a neon arrow pointing straight to the guy.

Well, I wouldn't think that there was any intent to show the guys face to make him look dumb. Personally, I didn't really care which one it was. But, I do understand your point that there is a right to privacy. I don't know...it could have been a mistake....?

*edit* Just saw your reply to CaveDiver...you may be right, I don't know. :dontknow:

I agree with that, especially since it would seem the boat portion was pre-dive not post dive. So the OP had no idea the diver was going to do something dumb.

It also has a lot to do with whether the diver knew he was being filmed or not. If the OP asked if it was ok and the diver said he didn't care, then it's more fair game. If it was just implied because a camera is out and no one objects, then that's a bit different IMO.

I usually go out of my way to stay out of pictures and videos, but that's just cuz I'm shy. ;)

It could very well have been a mistake, or merely incidental; I would gladly accept that as a valid reason. I'm a bit leary about it in this case because of the vehemence and dishonesty of the OP's responses, but that's why my original post solely lamented the fact that it was done, without inferring any malicious intent on the part of the video's author. We all make mistakes, but many times it's how we handle them that really matters.

The clip was probably FILMED pre-dive before anyone knew what would transpire, but there's a conscious decision to be made when putting together the movie whether or not to include a particular scene or not. I don't want to make anymore out of it than it is. I just continue to feel it's unfortunate that it was done.

Agreed, which is why I addressed that with my second statement.

...It would be fairly simple for the instructors or DM's to instead teach people how to lower their gas consumption in a variety of ways to extend their dive safely and proper gas management skills...

Not likely to happen in vacation destinations.

Their bread is buttered by getting people in the water for a little while, then getting them back on the boat and taking the next group out. If everyone started improving consumption they'd be closer to NDL's (esp DM's making multiple dives a day) and extending the diving day because everything took longer. Longer dives, longer SI's because of the longer dives and all of a sudden you've added 2-3 hours onto the day and no additional $$.

Which is one reason why I avoid this type of diving whenever possible. :D

Hi Cave Diver. I intentionally made my statement non-specific ("the instructors or DM's") to include not only those pros on a charter, but primarily the leaders who are responsible for certifying divers. The certification course(s) is where those lessons should be learned. I have seen people given tips on trim, buoyancy, air consumption and gas management on tropical destination boats by the crew, so it does happen, but probably not often. It didn't seem to take long at all, but I can see the other effects that you mention above happening more so in the case of ops that don't do the sharing air continuation dives. Surely there's got to be a couple of divers in most groups that have good gas consumption rates, so some of the divers should be expected to have longer dives and require longer surface intervals anyway...

At what depth did the gas-sharing event take place?

I am sorry you took it down. Regardless of the contravery, I find such video very helpful to me as a novice diver ( 50 dives). I would have liked to have seen this.

No you wouldn't have. Believe me the hype is way more entertaining then the video. A DM gives a diver a long tethered 2nd reg to suck on and they move around a reef while somebody films them from above. At one point I think the DM gave the dude a weggie, or maybe it was a wet willy, I really couldn't tell.

Oh yeah, and stay away from Cozumel I guess is the message that the OP really wanted to make. Only dive live-a-boards cause the other divers have mad skillz.

Well, I personally am glad I saw it as a new diver. But, I guess everyone is different. I understand the thoughts behind what some have explained here as extending the dive time. But, watching the video I did see that I was uncomfortable with the distance between the 2 divers sharing air. I'm sure not all of Cozumel is like that, but I am glad I know that's what some operations do.

The distance isn't necessarily an issue. The biggest problem I saw was the DM was practically dragging the other diver around. Would have been very easy for the reg to get pulled out of his mouth.
