I had the pleasure of knowing Edward, and I am deeply saddened to learn of his death. He was truly a gentleman and fun to be around.

My deepest condolences to his family and other friends.

Jeffery

Sad to hear, I did a dive over there and it's challenging, but awesome.

How sad,

I'm 37 years old and to see someone lose their life so early is haunting to me. It placed chills down my spine since I'm wanting to dive this weekend in Monterey.

Maybe this is not a good weekend to dive.

I can only wonder what went wrong? He was a Master Diver and his two dive buddies failed at their rescue attempt according to the paper.

What happened remains a mystery until further knowledge is recovered.

Here's a longer story in the Herald:
http://www.montereyherald.com/ci_7836161?nclick_check=1

The 11 a.m. buoy swell report was 10.2 feet NW at 13.8 seconds.

3 a.m. forecast yesterday:

> > .TODAY...SE WINDS 10 TO 20 KT...DECREASING TO 5 TO 15 KT IN THE
> > AFTERNOON. WIND WAVES 2 TO 5 FT. NW SWELL 9 TO 10 FT AT 13
> > SECONDS. CHANCE OF RAIN IN THE MORNING. SLIGHT CHANCE OF SHOWERS
> > IN THE AFTERNOON.

That's over my maximums to go hide at the Barge, much less dive
Monastery.

This was not a day to dive Monastery.

Note for the non-locals: Monastery Beach is about our most exposed dive
site. The Barge is about our most sheltered.

Chuck, the link requires having an account with the Herald. I didn't check to see if it was a free sign-up.

Based on your report it sure doesn't sound like a day I'd want to dive there (or even here!). So sorry for this diver's family and friends.

That link worked for me, Chuck.

Having been rolled in the surf on my one experience with Monastery, on a day when the water was almost flat, I can't imagine trying to dive there with 11 foot swells. But I can easily imagine someone getting knocked down, unable to get up, and having their reg fill with sand and begin to freeflow, because it happened to me. What a terrifying and ironic death, to die without even having started the dive . . .
