Have recently seen a divemaster course advertised as being able to be completed in 2 weekends.

How is this possible?

How does this not just devalue or make a mockery of the divemaster certification?

How do you have any confidence in any divemasters proficiency when hiring one?

Why does PADI allow it?

From their website, assuming the pre-requisites are met, which is only 40 logged dives, far too few IMHO

  • eLearning time commitment: 15 - 20 hours
  • Total time commitment for the whole course: 4 days of face-to-face training. The first 2 weekends of every month or intensive options are available.

They make money is why it is allowed, and the faster someone can get the DM card, the more people are likely to sign up for it, and pay 'professional" dues to PADI.

That's the way to go if you really don't want to be trained, just want the card. Disgraceful on the part of PADI and people who would accept this type of "training"

You PADI bashers need to up your reading skills. For example, it is 40 dives to start DM, but at least 60 to finish. The "two weekends" does NOT include all the advance eLearning, nor EFR. The "two weekends" is advertised as the time spent on face-to-face training, whereas some of the DM requirements are met on one's own, like the mapping project. I fault Ocean Turtle Divers for lack of full disclosure of what the DM certification they offer actually requires.

I don't care what agency it is, two weekends isn't enough, the e-learning and first aid aside.

You can't really have this argument without knowing the details, specifics or history of the individual candidate.... A well experienced Rescue Diver with 100's of dives and years of experience that has completed all course work, academics, mapping project, and has already assisted with many classes as a DM Candidate should be able to complete the course in four days. Besides, if they don't complete the entire course and show mastery of all required skills to the satisfaction of the instructor, they don't get the DM card.

I can imagine the fine print they would have in the advertisement: "Course completable in two weekends by approximately one in one-hundred interested applicants."
