So there I was minding my own business when I walked in to a retail dive store, nothing to do, off gassing in Key West and time on my hands, specifically, the one on the right.

When low and behold, my eyes caught a glimmer, a subconscious recognition, something, that turned my path and stopped me cold. How can this be, a titanium Ecozilla at half of popular internet pricing! But as I went closer to inspect, the clerk quickly mentions, you do not want it, it has no box and it is missing something but she had no idea what it was missing. Well, possibly the box, I said but saying that, it did not appear right at all, then I realized, no knurled ring! My heart sank, I felt so badly for the poor thing. Yeah, I said, it is missing a major part, raising my stainless Ecozilla to her sight line. Are you going to have it fixed, she shrugged her shoulders, so I asked how much for a "broken" watch? Well, let me say, it was dirt cheap. I could not resist. Well, to make a long story short, not only that but they sent it off for repair for me and at zero cost, it is now whole again. Cannot beat that with a stick. Oh, and by the way, Citizen dropped the Tizilla from their collection best I know about two years ago though some remain here and there.

This evening I pulled out an aged US Divers "Bancpain" watch circa early 1960s

Some time ago I had replaced the neoprene(rubber?) band with a Nylon band. Still attached to the band after all theses good and great years were three "O" rings, probably a remnant from my instructing days of yesteryear. one was the standard O ring the other was the very thing Sportsways O ring. (It would have been a surprise if I had had all five sizes and types of "O" Rings (for lack of a better term) on the watch

This was a very popular way of insuring that an "O" ring was always at hand.

I would assume that it is still a standard practice to store spare "O" rings on the watch band ???

Not if your watch has a bracelet :)

I have a Citizen Promaster Sea. It's a nice watch but since it's mechanic/automatic, you have to set it 5 minutes back every two days, which sucks after a while.

ZODIAC Sea Wolf

ZODIAC Sea Wolf is my first watch .. I was buy 1967 ..

The Zodiac Sea Wolf: Inspiration for a Serial Killer

1000w
Here at Hodinkee, we are always interested in a watch with a story. With that being said, we wanted to bring your attention to the Zodiac watches from the 1960's and 1970's. These sports watches never had the appeal of brands like Omega and Rolex, but then again, Rolex and Omega never inspired a serial killer, and Zodiac did....

This watch brand, and the Sea Wolf specifically, are considered by many to be the inspiration for the name and symbol of the Zodiac killer, who terrorized Northern California, and taunted police with cyphers from 1967-1974. Although police confirm there were seven victims of this assassin, the Zodiac claimed that he murdered as many as 37 people.

Before the Zodiac killer came on the scene, the only place that the Zodiac name and the Zodiac symbol appeared together were in ads for the Zodiac watch brand. It was actually later proven that the main suspect, Arthur Leigh Allen, did indeed wear a Zodiac Sea Wolf.
The Zodiac Sea Wolf shown above is actually owned by a Hodinkee staff

member. This automatic watch has a 17 jewel, self-winding movement, and is water resistant to 20 atmospheres.

In order to establish the best hermetic seal possible for the Sea Wolf, the engineers created a special back for the casing, a longer stem sleeve, several new types of gaskets, and a rounded crystal sealed in plastic. Throw in radium hands for greater visibility and you've got a diving watch used by amateurs and professionals, including military outfits such as the Underwater Demolition Team and the Navy SEALs.

A little-known brand with an incredible link to American history. This is a terrific buy if you're looking for a vintage diving watch on the cheap with a story to boot, however we must warn you these watches are EXTREMELY difficult to find these days.
