Hi Matt - we are a dive travel wholesaler that represents Mexico, Belize and 41 other dive destinations around the world.
If you mean $1000 with airfare included, thats going to be tough but it is possible to get pretty close.

Cozumel is probably going to be your best bet in that case - for example we have a special right now for 7 nights all-inclusive on an oceanfront resort with 5 days diving for $715 double occupancy. Thats all meals and drinks incl bar. More diving can be added.

A small inexpensive hotel in town without meals will of course be even cheaper, but then your budget on meals is going to be a bit of a wild card and down to you once you are there.

if you are traveling alone the single occupancy surcharge is going to bump rates up a bit, but as you can see, depending on where you are coming from if we can get you a good deal on airfare, we are certainly close to that price. If your travel dates are flexible, that will help keep airfare down as much as possible too.

Please contact me if you would like some advice on various options, a personalized quote using our current specials and/or assistance with airfare.

You really can't go wrong with any of the above mentioned destinations or hotels, they are all great - its just a matter of finding what will work best for your budget.

Thank you all for all the insight. It sure pays to ask. I had not considered Roatan, something to look into. I am considering Cozumel.

I figured if I was going to be on the Yucatan Peninsula renting a car in Cancun (cheapest flights), driving down and diving a day or two near Maroma Beach dive sites. Then heading down to Tulum. I saw they have some cheap cabana living available. Does anyone know if the best diving in Tulum is strictly serious cave diving. If so, I don't think we are up to it unless we trained specifically for cave diving.

However, I ultimately would like to vacation in Belize. When I looked into Belize it seemed too expensive, but if someone has a suggestion on how to bring the cost down it would be much appreciated. Chel, if you wanted to send me a message with some quotes and details of possible trips I would be interested in looking at those.

My window is somewhere between May 10th through June 1st if that helps.

Don I do have the premium DAN accident insurance policy. Worst case scenario I don't want to have a dive accident then a whopping deco chamber bill on top of it. Always nice to play it safe and get the insurance. Seems like that way you never end up using it, which is optimal.

Thanks all for the help,
MT

Honestly, an international dive vacation for $1,000 is dreaming. Cozumel is close. Cabo might be cheaper for you since you're on that coast but I've never been; don't know how it's done. Just getting to Belize City blows most of your budget and you certainly do not want to wander around there! :shocked2:

After that, you'd need a flight or other safe transportation to safer areas with diving.

Now Cancun is more affordable, depending on dates. The fares have fluctuated wildly in the last 90 days but some bargains exist...

But a rental car for a full week with full insurance so you don't end up in a Mexican jail wiring home for money so you can leave the country is going to run you $200-300 plus gas. The buses are cheap and really quite nice these days. Air conditioned with cheesy videos.

Now if you want outstanding reef diving and fish, you take the Play del Carmen bus, Cozumel ferry, and dive there. I think you'd be better off checking dates with the 200entertain discount, but you could try putting together a plan of your own.

If instead you want to tour the coast, see the sights, and do some less impressive diving - that's a different approach. Never done it. With Coz available, never wanted to. I did do one day of PDC diving once to try it, but that was enough.

Yeah, you could bus down to the Belize border, cross there, and bus along the coast avoiding the banditos. At least some have done it and described it.

This could be your best budget idea. Some cheap places and shore dives in Ft.Lauderdale...

But there's some great diving in the Calf Channel Islands and the liveaboards are fun. Done a couple of those.
