My recommendation is to look into a Liveaboard. Like someone said that once you get to Cairns it is still a few hours out to the GBR; whereas a Liveaboard you are right there. My experiences with them is you do your first morning dive before breakfast; while resting the shore folks arrive. Do your second dive before lunch; this could be while the shore dive operators are doing their surface interval. Do your third dive after the shore operators return back to shore. Do your night dive.
Just make sure the Liveaboard operator knows your diving experience before hand so you do not book a trip on a Liveaboard that is caters to advanced divers; no fun for you or the rest of the group. My brother did his OW Referral and AOW and I did the Master Diver Challenge from a "Training" Liveaboard in Phuket, Thailand...great experience. My daughter and I also did a Liveaboard in the Similan Island, Thailand and also had a great time with the opportunity to do four dives a day.
Enjoy and welcome to Poseidon's Realm; I think you will quickly discover, if you haven't already, there are more really cool places to dive than time allows.
