My son is coming home for fall break next week. I'm planning on meeting him somewhere along I 75 Sunday pm for a dive on Mon (10-8). We've done Blue Grotto, Alexander springs, and Deleon Springs, Personally I'd prefer to get him into the Gulf but will do a spring dive rather than rough h2o. we do not have a boat and have only lived in FL for 5 years so we don't know the state very well. Please post suggestions and offers to join us.
:)

Head down to Bradenton to dive the Spanish Rocks. Just south of SR 64 on Gulf drive. Max depth is 22 feet and vis ranges from 2 feet to 20 fet depending on the day. Youcan also go tooth diving down in Venice. That is a great dive for getting used to your gear and getting more comfortable in the water. I personally prefer to go out from Alhambra but you can also go from Venice Beach. You can find directionsto both of these on the board already if you do a search for them. They are dives that we do quite a bit over here. Hope it helps.

it does. I've been reading a lot about Venice diving and have tried to get away to go twice. A couple of ?
1. does anyone coord. their dives with the tides? if so...
2. What location do you use for computing the peak tide (Tampa or another)?

I don't. I just show up and get in. If you are going to try to set it up with the tides I would recommend using Sarasota as a referance point. It is betwen the two dive spots.

If it is a good day out, I would recommend saltwater. We have a couple of charters in the area. Let me know if you need names and numbers. We also have a couple of shore dives:

Venice - some life but not really. This place is for collecting sharks teeth. Depth for teeth is about 17-20. Don't stop in spots that are just sand - look for areas with with rocks, shells, and what not. When you walk out onto the beach have a look back at the line of trees. You will see three tall palms, head out from there or head out from the large white culvert, your choice.

Directions: Google Maps
I-75 exit 200 to Osprey.
Continue Southeast on TAMIAMI TRL N/FL-45 S/US-41 S toward BAYVIEW DR. Continue to follow TAMIAMI TRL N/FL-45 S. 7.4 miles Map
Turn RIGHT onto MIAMI AVE W. <0.1 miles
Turn LEFT onto NOKOMIS AVE S. <0.1 miles
Turn RIGHT onto PONCE DE LEON AVE. 0.3 miles
Turn LEFT onto HARBOR DR S. 0.1 miles
Turn RIGHT onto ALHAMBRA RD. 0.4 miles
Follow ALHAMBRA RD to the end

Spanish Rocks at Anna Maria Island is a good dive as well. Here you will find some life. Also if you have an SO that is not a diver they will enjoy the beach here. :) There is also the Regina/SugarBarge but I wouldn't even bother.

name the dive boats/shops and can you give me an idea about how long of a boat ride it might be to a good site. reef or wreck?

Thanks to you and get ur done....you've both helped much. will either be available on Monday?
