Dive spots in florida?

Hey all,

I am headed to Port Charlotte Florida at the end of the week to do some diving with a buddy. Saturday is going to be our hog wild day and was wondering if anyone has any favorite spots in the Gulf that they like to dive at, within a reasonable distance of Port Charlotte. I am hoping for some wrecks and would possibly like to try spear fishing. We don't have a boat but are thinking of renting one for the day if the wrecks are close enough to avoid the hassel of a charter. Any input on sites or best ways to do a trip of the sorts would be appreciated.

A charter would be both cheaper and more productive than renting a boat. Local knowledge with hotspots, licenses, conditions, and reports are critical if you want to bring fish home or you could be skunked on your own.
