There's an E-book outlining that idea one of the board members put together (can't remember who though at the moment) I wanted a soft case so I could still use the buttons and mark locations.

Thanks for the idea though - Eventually I'll probably do just as you have done.

Well, the buoy I desigend was for an unattended float down a stretch of river to measure current, so it didn't require any input. The 1 second tracking data provides excellent data resolution. If the GPS and a dive computer are synched on time, then you can record "waypoints" on the dive computer by noting the time from the dive computer. Low tech, but it is workable.

My system was designed for no user input. If I were to consider user input, I'd still do the buoy, but put the GPS in a "waterproof" bag like they use for radios and such for small, open boats. You can still access the controls, but the GPS is in a nice "waterproof" container.

Also, a tinkerer may want to put a button on the pelican case so that waypoints could be easily recorded. The only problem would be knowing what WP001 actually meant :)

When I record waypoint data, I have a notebook and write a *lot* of notes. Probably not something you want to do while diving.

The problem with that is that you need to be at the surface to record waypoints. The next step might be a remotely fired "waypoint incrementor" that has a button at the end of the lead line for the buoy.

My book, er enhanced pamphlet, Dive West Hawaii By Day-Use Moorings has a website www.malama-kai.org. http://www.malama-kai.org/buoys/locations.htm shows there may be some type similar for Maui. Some of it's boat dives can be shore dives and the aerial photos are helpful. Includeds GPS for moorings and pretty good instruction such as distance from shore and depth.

As soon as I get my GPS back from Afghanistan (if ever) I plan to start compiling an open source listing for Oahu...lol if you get me up to Kona I'll do it there too!!!

Maybe we can work together on this some then.

You do Oahu, I'll do Maui... who wants to do Kauai, B.I., Molokai and Lanai?

:) Tim

Maybe a "dense" question Tom, but can you tell me the part number by any chance??? I went through the pages, but don't recognize any of the part descriptions as being what I'm looking for ...

Mahalo, Tim

yeah - that's the page I looked at, but it looked more like button parts, not the actual assembly... I think I'll make a call and see what I can turn up ;)
