Just curious if anyone has found a site that lists GPS coordinates for dive sites around Hawaii... yes especially Maui ... with all the different names every site has around here it would sure make finding them simpler...

Aloha,
Tim

Thanks Al - that gives me a few to start with - so many places the directions are vague enough that it's tough finding the actual entrance/site... I read one that said something like head straight out from the beach for about 300 yards, sitting in the middle of nowhere ... it then becomes a matter of which part of the "beach" lol

Any others?

Mahalo, Tim

Do you have a GPS Tim? Maybe it would be something you start compiling yourself? I haven't seen any GPS Dive Site info out there but I know most of the local dive boat captains use GPS and they probably all have lists of their favorite sites. Some sites I'm sure they will be happy to share with you. Other sites, they might want to keep secret, you know? Good luck and let me know what you find out. I'm thinking of adding a GPS to my SCUBABUS just as a novelty kind of thing. Just think, in a short time I will be able to give you the coordinates for Makena Landing and other hard to find spots like Ulua Beach!!! (JK)

LOL Doug!

Yeah - I'm thinking of mapping out some of my favorite spots using gps (surface snorkeling, and dropping a lead line to record depth) and adding them to my website with gps coordinates.

I kinda get the impression most boats like to keep their gps coordinates a well guarded secret.

Do you really think it's a wise move to give out the GPS coordinate for ulua beach? Might start attracting a lot of people to that exclusive bay

I keep a gps in my truck because the speedometer is melted off (Lahaina sunshine at it's worse) at least when I'm taking a drive further than down to Safeway I know how fast I'm going now (yes I'm one of those that "tries" to stay within the speed limit...)

I'm currently tyring to make a waterproof soft case for it so I can take it snorkeling.

Aloha, Tim

btw - how was opening day of bug season?

There used to be a scuba geocache located at Airport Beach called King Kahekili and it was a container hidden in a sunken outrigger canoe. Storms seemed to have washed it away or covered it up so it's no longer available. Now if you Maui GPS guys ever get the urge to hide a scuba geocache over there you'd give me yet another reason to return.

Shaka Cache, has a ring to it doesn't it?

Here's a pic I took of a buddy finding the cache.

ok, it was a cheapie camera and it wasn't mine but, it's a pic!!!

Here's a little better one

It really does have a nice ring to it ... Might even end up at Ulua beach ...

I use a Pelican case (1020) to keep my GPS dry. Works great, so far. I also desigend a custom "float" that was designed to measure river currents, but could easily be used for a dive flag/GPS buoy.

I filled the bottom of a 1 gal container with lead shot and epoxy and then forced two part structural foam in the top for positive floatation. The foam is the same kind used for foaming in fuel tanks in small boats, so it's kinda waterproof. The buoy has nice stability and with the Pelican case on top really keeps the GPS dry and upright so it can see the satellites.

Works great in rivers. I'll have to try it out as a dive flag buoy some time.

Anyhow, I keep 1 second track recordings and have a detailed track of the buoy so I can calculate position and speed for a couple of hours using a (fairly cheap) Garmin eTrex Legend.

There's an E-book outlining that idea one of the board members put together (can't remember who though at the moment) I wanted a soft case so I could still use the buttons and mark locations.

Thanks for the idea though - Eventually I'll probably do just as you have done.

Aloha, Tim
