First off, apologies if this post is in the wrong area.

My wife and I are taking a trip to Playa Mujeres in March. We're interested in some casual dives in the area and I was hoping to get some dive shop recommendations from those that have been there.

We've both dove off the coast of Playa Del Carmen and in Cozmel. Cozumel was by FAR a better diving experience. Even though our upcoming trip is in Playa Mujeres, I'm not apposed to a bit of travel for a nice scuba experience.

Any suggestions?

I'm not specifically familiar with Playa Mujeres but I'm assuming it's on Isla Mujeres. If so, you'll be diving the Cancun sites. In Cancun, we always dive with Alvaro from AlwaysDiving.com. He's a great guy and great guide. He's sometimes slow to answer emails though.

Another YES for Alvaro and Alwaysdiving! He is the most interesting man in the world!

Thanks. I just sent an email to Alvaro through the "Contact Us" portion of their website. I don't suppose anyone has a direct email for Alvaro?

Just had a fantastic call with Alvaro. I'm feeling good about trusting his dive guidance when we go down there. He mentioned a 2 tank dive.

Dive 1 - A ship wreck dive at 80'
Dive 2 - shallower a nearby coral reef

Anyone have any personal experience with the ship wreck he mentioned? I don't have a name on it.

He also mentioned that there's some sort of Lion fish invasion at this wreck and reef and that hunting them is an option. I've never hunted Lion fish before and from what I'm reading, it's not terribly dangerous. Has anyone here ever hunted Lion fish?

If you are staying at Isla Mujeres, consider Buzos de Mexico (Home). They are quite safety conscious, and are the only dive shop that asked to see my AOW card. My guide was Danny. That guy is a fish in that he hardly uses any air. Loved the deep water wrecks and the reefs (I had only 1 day, did 5 dives). Not sure if they have nitrox yet (when I was there over New Years, no one on the island was providing it). Though I'd skip the underwater museum. The reefs out there are pretty nice. Not quite Cozumel nice, but still very nice.

Also, they had a really nice boat setup. In the morning (I'd recommend going), they are not busy at all. There were a total of 4 divers on the boat. In the afternoon/night, the boat was full.

Thanks to everyone that suggested Alvaro. We just returned from out trip and used Always Diving. You guys were SPOT ON. Awesome guy. Very knowledgeable. Super patient.

For future reference, the taxi from Playa Mujeres to Always Diving in Cancun took about 25 minutes and we paid resort taxi prices :-/.

Great experience. If anyone is EVER diving in Cancun and you need a dive guide.... Call Always Diving.
