I have been traveling to Portland Oregon for the past 3 years to conduct instruction for the Army. So this month, I flew up a day early and drove up to Seattle WA to do some diving. The first thing that happens it I am on the plane in Los Angeles and here comes ScottFiji! He is going to hang with some friends. Small world. Scott, the diving was terrific, you should have gone diving.

Met with Bob Lew to dive West Seattle Alki Seacrest Cove Number 2. http://www.pnwscuba.com/sitemaps/cove2.gif The dive plan was to go to 100 feet for 1 hour with a slow decent and accent up from that depth checking out the structures along the way. Objective was the Giant Pacific Octopus (GPO) and maybe even a 6 gill shark. Found the Honey Bear boat wreck and also under some overturned metal bins, GPO with suckers larger than a quarter. Estimated size at 5 feet. This was a beautiful dive with huge anemone. Just Great and one of the best dives in years. I saw many familiar species, but the size, huge.

Comment:
It was bitter cold when we arrived at the Edmunds Underwater Park. Air Temp was in the 20’s with wind chill bringing the temperature down to zero. Having worn my Dry suit undergarment to the site, we quickly suited up. Bob took me and showed me the map of the park. Ropes and chains laid on the ocean floor to form a grid pattern. Simple enough to navigate. The objective of today’s dive, fun. That we had in spades. We went to the Triumph (a former tug boat), Cupid, Mesmerized and Genius wrecks, Cathedral, boat yard and Enhancement (big industrial sized tires). Spotted ling cod (3-4 feet), Cabazon (also large -2 feet or so), stripped perch, sea lemon and Hooded Nudibranch.

My dive partner will send me copies of his photos later and I will post them here.

You were brave to dive the 17th -- I didn't even leave the HOUSE that day. I did dive Cove 2 the next day -- water was its usual chilly self, but we sure got cold fast after we got out.

Glad you got to enjoy our underwater attractions despite the rather unwelcoming weather.

Welcome back, Melvin.

I am glad you had a great time. And diving at a site differant than here is always good.

That is inspiring, seeing that divers from other areas can go somewhere and meet up with locals and have a good time, and see the sites. This Sat we have a diver from North Carolina coming in to dive with us at Rufugio Beach. I am sure he will have memories to carry a lifetime.

Thanks for sharing with us.

I assume that is the same gentleman who will be diving Deadmans on Sunday?

My guide was a fine diver that had come to San Diego last fall for a dive. After failing to find a local guide in the Sand Diego area I agreed to dive with him. I drove down to LaJolla Cove and did a dive with him. I enjoyed diving with him in San Diego and that was enough.

So he returned the favor and so much more by diving with me when I went to Seattle. In short, if you help your fellow man with no expetation of return, life is good. But when the opportunity came up to dive Seattle, there was a known partner willing to dive with me. Life is great.

That is soooo cool. I dove that same site last fall and no GPO's to be found, tho other divers had seen them (and grabbed them) earlier in the morning. I was quite annoyed at that but it was still great diving, huh? All the shrimp and crab everywhere. Different than CA...but every bit as beautiful. That's awesome!

My favorite dives have been in the Puget Sound. Washington is an awesome place to dive. I did dives there last July and the November before that. Give me cold water over any WWW destination any day!

Nice report, Melvin.
