Dive Master Training

Greeting All,

I am trying to get a better understanding of one part of the current DM training. I am probably about 25% done with my meeting my requirements.

I have finished the Dive Theory Exam...but a bit confused on the other test. I am not looking for questions, but where I should get my efforts. I have been told it is open book, then no it is not. I have been going over the Instructor Manual that came with my DM kit. I have been doing some reviewing of my KRs from the DM as well as the Encyclopedia of Diving.

I am probably making more of the last test than I should....but like a lot...hate any form of written test.

Are you talking about PADI Divemaster, and are you talking about the DM Final Exam? If so, you may use the Instructor Manual to look things up, and if you've done the KRs and read through the Encyclopedia, it is not likely you'll have any problems. So it is not really Open Book in the broad sense, just Open Manual.

But you've mentioned the Dive Theory Exam, which is party of the Instructor course, not the Divemaster course.

So what class are you taking, and what is your actual question?

I am taking the PADI Dive Master Course. There are two test part 1 and 2. Part 2 covers dive theory (I believe there were six or seven tests under the dive theory which included dive physics which can be taken on line or with your instructor).

With in my DM crew pack their is a black binder with a training log with a set of white inserts called Instructor Manual which covers the general standards and procedures, Course Program Guides and Professional Membership.

I am working on studying my references to get ready for part 1, backwards I agree but that is what I did...wanted to get the more difficult stuff out of the way. With what you have said, it sounds like I am able to use the Instructor Manual etc.

You should be writing a DM Exam with a "Part A" and a "Part B." Both parts have 60 questions for a total of 120, and the 2 parts may be written separately.

In very general terms, the first part covers the first 5 chapters of the DM textbook, and the second part covers dive theory(physics, physiology, RDP, skills and environment, and equipment.)

Review your KRs from the textbook, ask questions if there's anything you don't understand.Chapter 9 of the text warrants extra attention for study, and use your Encyclopedia to cross-reference and gain additional information when studying. The exam should be closed book.

I believe the instructor manual says the IM may be referenced for the exams.

divertheo-Im a bit ahead of you with my DM course. Just to clarify. You first have to complete the chapter reviews and have those marked .Then you have to do a two part FINAL exam. 60 questions comprising of multi choice and true/false answers.
My advice would be NOT to do the exams as "open Book". (except of course where you need the rdp and e rpd)
You get TWO goes at the final exam.The whole point is to see what you have retained from the books and to give you the chance to discuss where you have gone awry with your theory instructor.
Study study study-practice the formula.
Ohh and one little hint--READ the rdp back and front.

when i teach DM, i warn my students that the written test is HARD. We teach SDI and the exam is closed book. I expect my DM candidates to know their dive physics and dive physiology cold.
i'm equally hard on my DM candidates once we get 'em in the waters. When i put a DM candidate in front of an OW student, that DM needs to be the expert. Yeah...i'm tough but my DM students love it. I'll be graduating a new DM in the next few weeks and she is already chomping at the bit.
