Gordon/Thomas: Agree. Instead of saying permitted I should have said places an inexperienced diver would be taken to dive.

Christi:
So choose the answer you like the best...and don't solicit advice from the veterans if you don't like what we have to say! For an inexperienced diver that was just certified last month, you can learn a lot from these very helpful and knowledgeable veterans...so be nice!

Christi: If you asked about diving in Cozumel, then yes you did.

Maybe inexperience in diving, but not stupid when it comes to obeying the laws when it comes to posession of deadly weapons (ie: KNIFE)

And no, I asked NOTHING about "diving in Cozumel." I said I'd be diving in Cozumel but my question was directed at going in/out of CUSTOMS. Not diving. Not marine park. Not Cozumel.

CUSTOMS.

And it took four pages of posts to get to...

Christi: To answer the OP's question...this is Cozumel...a primarily diving related destination. The customs people (even in Cancun) are quite familiar with diving equipment, including dive knives...and there is no law that prohibits bringing these items with you, in your checked bags.

Thank you. In one paragraph you have answered what I needed and asked in the original post.

Really, i'm not upset, not even trying to be short, (though it may come off that way, and if so, apologies.

My point to the subsequent posts was that for all the "veteren advice" I was getting, not a single bit of it pertained to the original question.

But it's been an education, that's for sure.

:rofl3: FREAKING AMAZING! And yet you post on the world's largest diving message board within the Cozumel specific forum. Seem like to me it was specific to both. Perhaps you should have posted your now ridiculous question on an International Air Travel message board since you now conveniently claim it has nothing to do with anything this forum is all about!?!?!? I resent you attitude toward Christi and everyone else that was doing little more than to help you.

Now, go away!

He said Cozumel and Playa del Carmen...and an appropriate sized cutting device is called for in most any diving. I didn't have a dive knife when I went Cenote diving last August 2007, but I did have a 4 inch long pocket knife that I packed in my checked luggage and had NO issues with US or Mexican authorities.
Only you know if you need a knife in your dive kit. So Pack It!

All the best,
Geoff

I agree...... I have gone to Cozmel twice in the last year without any problems. I have a small 3 1/2 inch knife packed in my BC with the checked luggage. No one even opened the bag in Mexico and both times I came back without any problems. The knife is small and concealed in my BC pocket in case of trouble. Last year I got tangled in a fishing line and need it to cut myself free.

Hehe...wow.....this topic sure got blown out. Hey Gordon, wanna go with me to do a shore dive out by the cruise ships?.......LOL.

Sure. We could count hull barnacles. ;^)

Carnival pays minimum wage(Meskeegan though) for taking those things off while under them........

If you have to have your knife, you can check it in your luggage. As stated above though, knives are not allowed in the dive park. Having dove in Cozumel more times than I can count, I do not recall ever needing a knife for any dive underwater.

Pinheads? There may be items that are arbitrarily questioned by airport security, but anyone who would try to smuggle a knife onto a plane is himself, IMO, a pinhead. The rule on knives is very clear.
That was a no-brainer, huh? :silly:
He's right; you won't need it in Cozumel, so leave it at home -- especially if it's an expensive or valuable knife. Even in your check-in luggage, they will find it. They confiscated my disposable razor the last time I was there.
The security guy needed a shave? Dumb, but I have had things kept for dumb reasons. Before TSA had a rule on tanks in luggage, I checked my pony with valve in place. Once lost a bottle of liquid shoe sole dressing but they left the pony.
On my first trip to Coz last month I never once thought about my knife, which is grommeted to my BC and just rode along in my checked baggage. I dove with it every day unaware that there was a rule against it. I never had an occasion to use it, and nobody ever said anything to me about it. Now that I know I'll abide by the rule, though I too think of it as a necessary part of my kit.
I always forget it's there. No one has ever said anything. I did use it once on a boat to saw off a broken, plastic weight belt keeper that was poking me in the back.
I have always(since 9/11) just packed my pocket knife & dive knife in my checked in luggage with no problem.........
Yeah, I do put my pocket knife and belt knife in my checked luggage, carry nail clippers. I had those kept by a Honduran security guy on 9-17-01 but they were keeping a lot of things that week.

Had a Bahamian agent keep my lighter in January. He blamed TSA; I explained that TSA allowed them now; he said he had not been informed; I explained that it's on the sight and considered asking him if he was ignorant or just stealing lighters - but had a better idea and shut up.
