My DAN policy expires Jan 31 and I think I'm going to move to Dive Assure. The reason are that it is primary and, if I read right, it covers equipment loss/damage and trip cancellation/interruption, the latter two having to be purchased separately with DAN.

Now here is my main querie. How many would advise holding onto a DAN policy sort of as a rider for Dive Assure to cover any costs that may not be paid by Dive Assure? Is it worth the expense? Are there any drawbacks? Any comments are welcome, but I hope most are by people who KNOW and not just guessing.

What are the policy limits with the Dive Assure policy? If the coverage limits are likely to pay out up to a level that will cover most diving accidents, I wouldn't bother with secondary coverage...it won't kick in.

Remeber that insurance is a complete waste of money...unitl you need it. If you don't suffer a loss, you've wasted every penny of your premium.

Of course, that's like the Scotsman who is found crying his eyes out after buying two one dollar chances at the lottery and winning.

"Why the tears, Jock? You've won!", they asked.

"Aye, but I wasted a dollar, didn't I?" he replied.

ian,

the humor is appreciated. I got a good laugh. I can certainly see the Scotman's side of it.

Hi bfisher,

I have the DAN preferred insurance. I understand the difference between primary and secondary insurance, and I don't know the specifics that the Dive Assure policy covers.
That said: When I took a DCS hit in 2004, the DAN policy covered medical expenses not covered by my primary insurance, paid for new airfare home (for me and my SO), paid for most of the cost of 3 extra days in the hotel (capped on a per day basis) and paid the cost of shipping my gear/luggage home (all were Doctor ordered)-approx $3000 worth in all.

I'd suggest that, before you let the DAN policy lapse (at approx $80 per year, IIRC), you check into the Dive Assure policy to see if things like that are covered.

Good luck,
Mike

Be aware you are talking about their Diamond plan. I filed a claim for trip interruption with them early Sept. They told me last week I should have a check by this week. You know, the "it's in the mail" line.

I don't know what the amount will be for. Can't wait to find out!

The other thing that is nice about DiveAssure is that if a family member that doesn't live with you dies while you are on a trip, you are covered. Some other policies I looked at only covered members of the family if they lived with you. If you have elderly parents, that is something to consider.

all of our equipent is on our home owners policy which covers loss, theft, and damage while traveling. We still carry DAN. Crazy not to have some sort of Ins. Only takes one time
