Cozumel is a very prosperous little island by Mexico standards. You'll see almost none of the crushing, depressing poverty that you see in border towns like Tijuana, Nuevo Laredo, or Matamoros. And the drive from the Airport is both short and pleasant to the Downtown area, and to the Hotels between Downtown San Miguel and the International Pier (where most Cruise Ships dock), about 2 miles south of Downtown. It's a longer drive to the big AI resorts at the southern end of the island, but still no more than 20 minutes or so. But you really don't need to go to the big AI resorts. I have been going to Cozumel for over 25 years now - since 1989, and I won't do All Inclusive on Cozumel. Too many very good restaurants and very friendly, warm, welcoming people.
