Thanks for this thread. I have waist length very thick hair and since I am just starting out was trying to figure out what to do about the straw feeling. When diving I pull mine up in a high ponytail, twist it and pin on top with a giant barette. Mask strap goes over the whole mess which helps keep it in place. I have to use a big pick to untangle it before brushing so had just been dealing with the dive hair. Was planning to try conditioner but didn't know to use the leave in kind. Gonna try it now.

Thanks
Judy

I have never worried about whether the conditioner is the leave in kind or not. I just glob it on and work it in. My experience is that no matter what kind I use, if it is left on for a while it works so much better. My daughter is in the pool almost every day now in the summer and her hair really dries out. So I put on some stuff called Cholesteral in her hair every couple weeks. Its this thick, gooey, pastey stuff. We leave it on for a hour or so to deep condition. Works a charm. I have used it also after a dive, but dialute it a bit with water so it will squeeze out of the bottle. I have never worried about a build up, since I have learned to final rinse with cold water.

MsParamedic is correct this is the best way to take care of the problem. You can find that stuff in any salon and it works really well.

MsParamedic:
I don't like putting conditioner in my hair prior to a dive (the whole polluting thing) so I use a children's spray/leave in conditioner. Just spray it in, brush your hair, and you're good to go!

I use for in water use one of the many environmentally made shampoos and conditioners for my hair, that are available - that are water based.

I have a perm in my shoulder length hair and found even in the cold, fresh water I ended up with wonky dive hair. So, I finally opted to include a tube of gook in my dive bag. When I surface I scrunch a bit in really quickly and I'm good to go. I use DEP cream gel by Schwarzkopf. No more crunchy/wonky dive hair that you can't get your fingers through! - makes me happier anyway. I guess to each his own.

I wonder if there is any hope for highlighted hair in the sun and with the saltwater. My highlights have pretty much bleached white and my roots now look black. Between the hair, the watering eyes after a dive, the runny nose, I must look like hell when I when I come out of the water. Thank goodness my boyfriend is a diver too...

wear a tank top, no one will ever notice your hair... lol

or leave the tank top off altogether!! :eyebrow: Woo Woooo!

how U doin? :browsmile

Well I do nothing with my hair after dive. But i have long curly hair which I don't comb anyway. I simply leave them to dry a bit and then do ponytail.
As the highlights and sun and salty water - can;t help with that either but even my natural hair loose color (they turn from chestnut into redish ones)

I have long, curly, red hair.... so I look like medusa daily anyway. I usually put a little gel in my hair and/or put a hat on my head if I don't have time to shower right after. I have accepted, however, that there is a good chance that I will scare adults and children with my hair-do anyway (be it pre-dive or post-dive), so I have long since abandoned the hopes of finding a solution for the medusa-conundrum! Acceptance truly is bliss....:)

seriously though, I put conditioner in my hair right after I'm done diving if I have somewhere else to go. That way i can just brush through it at least and throw it up in a pony. but if all else fails, resort back to the tank top :eyebrow:

Ok, I have figured it out!!! After I got out of the water at the site, I just walked around in nothing but a great big towel. No one even noticed that I had hair! Worked like a charm.
