Blue View Divers is an eco friendly dive center situated in Phi Phi Viewpoint Resort, Loh Dalum Bay on Phi Phi Island, Thailand.
Blue View Divers long term goal is to be able to give something back to the island through cleanup and educational projects.
On Dive For Earth Day April 22nd, our dive team consisting of 10 staff and divemaster trainees and a customer organised both a dive and shoreline cleanup in the National Marine Park.
The team headed to Maya Bay, famed for being the beach location of the movie "The Beach" starring Leonardo Di Caprio. This bay draws many tourists daily from Krabi, Koh Lanta, Phuket and Railay and is one of Koh Phi Phi's most famous attractions.
However with the heavy influx of tourism there has also been an increase in rubbish being discarded and washed up on the beaches.
Blue View Divers has their lunch break during their surface interval on the beautiful beaches of Phi Phi Ley and conduct regular weekly cleanups of the beaches in which many customers have taken part and contributed to helping keep Koh Phi Phi's beaches beautiful.
Over the past 4 months, we have been stockpiling rubbish collected during our lunch breaks in a hut on Maya Beach and on Earth Day we managed to remove 332 Kilograms of rubbish from the beach to be sent to Krabi where it will be sorted and any recyclable items will be recycled.
Out of 332 Kilograms of rubbish only 32 Kilograms consisted of recyclable items that could be processed on the island itself: plastic containers and tin cans. These were distributed to the recycling center on Phi Phi Island.
The beach cleanup was followed by a dive cleanup in Tonsai Bay, a location where all the dive centers on the island conduct their night dives. This is also a popular snorkelling spot and unfortunately there was a lot of rubbish littering the dive site.
Using lift bags the team managed to bring up 180 Kilograms of rubbish including netting, fishing cages, car batteries and more flotsam and jetsam.
If you would like to come and dive and contribute during our beach cleanups, all volunteers are more than welcome to join our daily dive trips!
Blue View Divers will be hosting another cleanup on September's Dive For Earth Day.
