ScubaSarus:
I called around today to the tire stores and visited HD. I couldnt locate an innertube. I found ones with slime sealer in them but I just want a plane ole inner tube.

Any suggestions.

what about those long styrofoam dowels they sell in the summer sections of stores. They are floats for kids to use in the pool/at the beach. I was thinking of wrapping one of those around a crate.

Heres the other side to that question: How many of you honestly don't display a dive flag? There are a million safety reason to carry one, but there are also some reasons to try to remain unnoticed (in New England in particular).
Lets refrain from chastising anyone on their habits, please.

As for the boating licenses.... Just because people should be educated doesn't stop them from being donkeys behinds. Most of the folks on the road are legal drivers and I am still bewildered by what takes place on a daily basis.

Im thinking the crate styrofoam would be hard to tow.

As for displaying the flag.

We occasionally anchor the flag some place and retreive on the way in. You would not want to tow a flag srounf the fort Wetherill Island with all the overhangs and lobster traps.

Also going thry the crevasses at Beavertail is hard to do with a flag.

On the Folley call wall dive we also anchor a flag as weusually stay next to the wall for the whole dive.

Besides those 3 places we usually tow a flag.

Its been awhile since I made mine, but I am pretty sure I got my innertube at a car parts store. Try NAPA or Autozone....they should have one, or tell you where to get one. Considering how few tires need tubes these days, it probably is getting tough to find them. I'll try and get a pic up here soon.

If it doesn't have to be pretty you can totally go the recycling route and use empty plastic bottles to keep the crate afloat. If 2 liter tonic bottles aren't durable enough, what about detergent bottles. Paint them to camouflage them.

Ended up getting the lobster pot type at my LDS. It works fine and can break down easily. I threaded the line though a ring located below the float and then tied it to the lead weight. My one criticsm would be that I would like the flag to be a few feet higher off the surface though. Thanks everyone for their input!
