Alfa is the international spelling. Alpha is the American spelling.

Just like Aluminum is the American spelling Aluminium is the international spelling.

Sorry to bring back a dead post.

Actually, I have never seen it spelt "alfa" until I came to the USA. It has always been "alpha" everywhere I go.

Just like I have never seen it spelt as "rediculous" until I meet some Americans.....

My Funk and Wagnels lists the spelling of the past tense of spell as, "spelled."

"Alfa" is the spelling given for the phonetic word used in the phonetic alphabet for the first letter of the Roman alphabet, "A," in the International Code of Signals. It is not the name of the first letter of the Greek alphabet, which is "alpha."

"Spelled" or "Spelt" are both correct in most dictionaries.

I just did a check and found that "Alfa" indeed is the correct spelling, but in the "American Version" of the ICAO. The British on the other hand uses "Alpha". I was a signaler in the military and our version is "Alpha".
