I have read a bunch of reccomendations for cozumel. What I am interested in how much dives cost if you are not on a dive and stay package.
I have seen some of the dive ops quote 80+ for a two tank dive- Is that right????

I am planning on four days of diving - hopefully with some shorw diving too and will be staying at the occidental allegro in the southwest.

Any advice???

Cozumel Equalizers' rate for a two tanker is about US$50; that's if you dive 3 or more days with them, I believe. $80+ is a ripoff.

There's not really a whole lot of shore diving opportunities on Cozumel, and none that I know of where you can get into the really spectacular reef formations that you can get to from boats.

"Dive Palancar," I think? I used them on my first/one trip as they were handy, and - I liked them. They are a little pricey, being The Resort Operator, but there's something to be said for convenience. The port was closed to all operators because of wind when I got there, and I tried booking thru the lobby concierge first - which competes with Dive Palancar, but :upset: that didn't go well when the port finally opened. A one time problem, perhaps.

When we finally started boarding for our first trip, I told DM Ishmel that it was my female companion's first blue water dive, and he took extremely good care of her, holding her hand when he wasn't otherwise busy. Really, it took both of us to take care her! After carefully discussing her weight needs, she left the two 1# weights I gave her in the room, and she was underweight for the safety stop. There's Ishmel trying to hold her down, and her upside down in the water. I've traveled with a woman before, tho, and had two more 1# weights in my belt pockets. I swam over, put one in each of her BC pockets, and she slowly droopped over. Ever had to not laugh under water?

DMs all carry sausages, but his wouldn't inflate. Glad I had mine, as that channel can be busy with bad drivers. I also carried an AOL computer disc in my right hand on ascent to use as a signal. I liked their big boat, be prepared to shove yourself backwards as the boat drivers coming to pick you up try to run over you.

I'm sure you can save money with another operator picking you up there, taking you back for lunch, picking you up again after lunch. I just haven't done it that way there, yet. No shore diving there that I know of, but it's a short cab ride to the dive park - the name of which escapes me?? Somebody tell him about that, will ya'?

Advise on Allegro

Take 100 watt light bulbs, really! I'd read about this, and sure enough - the rooms were dark with the low watt bulbs they use.

Happy bubbles, D-Don

I was in Cozumel last month and my gf and I went with "Blue Bubble" divers located in town. We had no complaints with them The DM's were thorough and safety conscious. Their dive sausages did work but as "dandydon" said in his post, carry your own. You could become separated from the DM and would then need your own. The dives were in the $60. US range each. for a two tanker on air. Their boats are fast so you don't spend a lot of time on the water. I would skip the dive to "Barracuda Reef" which is outside the marine reserve and cost extra. I didn't see much there but did experience "rocket propelled" current. I think that dive is over-rated as the barracuda have long since been fished out.:shades:

Thanks for the advice everyone. I thought the rate seemed a little steep-the $60 range sounds more what I was hoping for.

Are there any other resorts that have shore diving- I read that some offer tanks for shore diving. I know it will not be in the Bonaire range, but would like to squeeze in an extra "freedom" dive.

on a related note- does anyone know how much a taxi from the airport to the allegro resort would cost?- the transfers with Expedia were 40 pp each way- surely a taxi is cheaper?

Unless you hike out to the main road, the only transportation out of the airport are the vans. IIRC, US$9 or $10 per passenger. Holds 10 or so passengers.
Easiest return to the airport is via taxi. It is definitely less than $40 --- I don't know specifically for Allegro, but probably around $15.

I guess that would be Chankanaab. It's not really a dive park, but there are dive shops there and the shore diving is fair (with the exception of the cavern entrance, which is very cool). Going with a DM is mandatory now, since some clueless gringo went and got lost and had to be rescued a few months ago, or so they told me.

The $60 rate you are hearing is quite typical for Coz for 2 tank dives. The higher rates you are hearing about are more than likely the likes of Aldora and Living Underwater. These two operators use 120 cu/ft tanks rather than 80's so you are getting 50% more air. Both operators typically charge $80-90 for 2 tanks but if you compare air you are getting an entire tank extra for 33% more money. Just a thought.

I am a bit biased since I always dive with Aldora. This, like most of the advice you receive, will have a slant attached. We all think that our favorite DO or shop is the best.

FWIW, I nearly always come up "in the yellow" anyway, so a bigger tank usually wouldn't do me much good. YMMV, of course.
