Place: La Jolla Shores
Date: Sat, Apr 19th, 2008
Conditions: Nice
Temp: 53deg
Vis: 10-12feet

Place: Shaw's Cove, Laguna Beach
Date: 04/29/08
Conditions: 1-2 surf, 2-3 surge, low tide
Temp: 59
Vis: 8' at that
Comments: Overall conditions were not as good as last week at this same spot. Viz was murky, but did manage to catch a few glimpses of spotted sea bass and garibaldi--local inhabitants of the area. Surge was strong enough through "the crevice" to keep me from exploring this part of the the reef. All in all, not a good day for Shaw's.

Thanks for the report. We have a couple dives in Laguna this year. I love the differant terrain underwater down there.

Place: Redondo Beach, Veterans Park
Date: 05/09/08
Conditions: .5-1 surf, North bound surge
Temp: 52
Vis: 8' to 10'
Comments: Great conditions. We dropped down at about 7:30 PM. We saw a stinger shrimp, 2 small octopus and one tiny one swimming around. There was a Sea-lion hanging with us on the surface both going out and coming in. He also did a swim by when we were underwater. There was a bunch of crabs and three dinning on a fish. We also saw a blue jellyfish about 6 inches in diameter. Divers that came out before we were going in said that they had about 15 feed of Viz.

Hey ren sounds like your conditons where better then out .5ft vis at times on thursday.

I am new to the board, and will be visiting Catalina for the first time on June 12.
I am a certified diver, but my 15 year old son is not. I was thinking of having him take a introductory dive at the Casino Dive park. Is this a good place for someone to have a good first impression of diving? Also, what types of marine life are usually seen in this area. Thanks for any info.

I cant tell you about if that is a good place or not. i know when i dove there it was nice and easy. some of the sealife that is usualy seen is garabaldi, kelp rockfish, kelp bass, nudibranchs, sea cucumbers, bat rays, lobster, blacksmith, giant kelp, gargonias, along with a ton other to many to list.

Is he going to be cert. before you get here, if not he is not going to be able to rent any gear & if he has never been in the water with scuba before it's not a good idea to do an ocean dive as his first dive. IMHO
