Hello. I've been a DiveCon for about 6 years now and I am looking to become an Instructor. I am contemplating switching over to PADI from SSI because SSI Instructors have to work through a specific dive shop and can't teach on their own. Does anyone know if I can enter directly into a PADI IDC or do I need to complete the PADI Divemaster course first, even though an SSI DiveCon is technically an Assistant Instructor?

Just roll into the IDC,there might be some aditional skills to learn.
CESA and freeflow reg.breating come to mind as skills most agencies don't teach(any more)

BTW two identical threads merged

So I don't need to take the PADI DM course? Are there no other crossover requirements? I can just "roll" into an IDC?

PADI and SSI are not that different.
Just go to a course director and have a nice talk about his upcomming IDC.:D

There is a procedure to cross over. There are marketing, standards and training procedures you need to know. If you have an Instructor you will be working with, he can go over the information with you.

PADI is all inclusive and as a Divemaster you are expected to know the instructors manual, standards, policies, dive skills and a number of other things.

It not just about the diving, it's the full package with PADI.

No, you will not be required to take the PADI DM course. Just contact a PADI facility conducting an IDC and your good to go. As was stated, you will need to learn a couple of skills not required by SSI but they are minimal, and you won't have a problem. An IDC teaches you to teach the PADI way, and they will help you out with any areas of skills presentation you need, at EASE in Vero Beach, Fl. where I went, they did anyway.

Generally agree with the above in terms of what's required but I'd recommend that you arrange a prep session prior to commencing your IDC. We did this by default in my former job. All candidates went through the three day prep regardless of their origin. We did sometimes find substantial differences in candidates who came to us from prior DM/DC/AI/whatever training. Having a little heads up will reduce the learning curve a little during the IDC. You will have plenty of opportunity to learn technique during the IDC but if you're also having to learn how to perform skills the PADI way at the same time, it does add to the pressure.

Our three day prep took all candidates through theory (and exams), confined skills and rescue skills with plenty of demonstrations and example classroom presentations from experienced staffies in between, so at least you know what to aim for.

I promise you it will be a great deal of help if you can arrange something like this before starting your IDC.

Cheers,

C.

you dont HAVE to be associated with a shop to teach for SSI, AFAIK that is. . .
