Rachel0 the hole you are referring to is called a scupper.
Unfortunately you have seen what I saw many years ago, DON'T GET INVOLVED the dolphins plight is very sad but it is even sadder that people don't have the guts to speak out when they see what they perceive as a wrong or try to justify it.

awap:
Yes, you are right. That makes absolutely no sense and should be stopped. I guess I was giving the shrimper much more credit than was due.

I should have known better. We lost out last dive at Stetson yesterday on the Spree as we joined a search for a shrimp boat crewman who decided to quit "in mid stream" so to speak. He just jumped overboard and disappeared.

I myself want to, and will, do something. I think this crew should be punished.

But there are so many divers out there, is there not something we can all do together? Please, please think about it. This is an expensive sport and money is what talks there must be some way to use this influence.

why do you say don't get involved?

That CD is saying that you saw the problem that people "Don't get involved" not that you shouldn't.

I wish you had gotten pictures of this vessel and the acts the crew were performing. Pictures can tell a thousand stories, and the Coast Guard would have had something to go on. Still, I applaud your willingness to speak out. All the best of luck in pursuing this.

Think about it our society is getting worse all the time this attitude is prevalent in our society even when it is another person that is being wronged. They will ignore it where they can or try to make excuses where the wrong is obvious.
All I can tell you is do what YOU think is right....be a leader not a sheep.

I think one of the other divers got pics. He's going to email me them when they're developed and I hope to send those to the Coast Guard. I'm emailing the Coast Guard now, I do have the name of the boat.

Unfortunately, I doubt if you are going to find a legal authority who can and will do anything about it.

If your friend did get pictures of this, and s/he sends them, they should be made public. As Awap said, if the dolphin was caught in a net and was thrashing about, then the crew might have to do what they have to do in order to protect themselves. But this is not the case. To intentionally catch and beat this creature is inexcusable. These pictures should not only be sent to the Coast Guard and other legal authorities, but our Congressman and Senators, as well as to the media. This action should be stopped and the offenders prosecuted.

They should also be sent to the different Dive Groups who take on these causes.

This truly saddens me to think that this action still goes on.

I am so glad you got the name of the boat! I would definitelyl report them. This is a outrageous thing to do. I hope they get punished.
