I hope you took the screwdriver and smacked him up the head with it. That seems like a great way to gouge the rings, or worst case put a hole in the suit. The rings really aren't hard to remove if you are doing it right.
 
At the time I didn't know better but I've got the trick of it now too, having installed my Glove Locks yesterday. Don't see why prying would be necessary at all once you learn to bend the back part in. The first cuff took 15 minutes to disassemble and install the glove lock onto, having never done it before, and the second one only took 5 minutes.
