Mike,
But if you are going to do it right ( :) ) then surely go for what is affordable ?BTW I have used a TX40 and TX20 in cold water and it was fine - club equipment but for myself I'd rather spend that bit more because .... I am worth it :)

The Abyss Explorer (from Abysmal) http://abysmal.com gives you outstanding performance, not to mention they'll sell you rebuild kits with no hassle.
Some folks claim Poseidon's regs aren't "dir approved" because they use a "non-standard hose".
Keep in mind that some (most?) of the Apeks use non-standard hoses too, 1/2" instead of the 3/8".

My choices are APEKS ATX50+TX40 backup, the Scubapro MK25/G250HP/R190 are excellent choice.

I have also heard that Dive-rite RG2000 and RG1200 are top performers that fit in realistic budget. I would certainly give a chance to this new reg on the market.

Poseidon's are a quality reg at a price, well, that has come down quite a bit in recent years. You'd be hardpressed to find a reg that will give you more gas at depth - you get a blast every time you inhale. However, I alway felt like I was swimming around with a log in my mouth.....

The Apeks are a quality line, good price, excellent reliability - a top coldwater reg. The DS4 first stage has all 3/8" ports, I think all the other first stages have at least one 1/2" port.

The main reason why Poseidon regs are NOT DIR is the fact that the second stage diaphragm cover cant be removed with tools. You need a screwdriver to get the cover off on the Jetstream, and Cyclon. The new Xstream, who knows. I also think they dont like the upstream design either. Failure mode (of 2nd stg) would be complete shut off of gas.

BTW, the hose issue on the Apeks regs can be easily rectified, on the Poseidon, you are stuck with that hose. Little bit of a difference there.

Abyss only sell the rebadged Poseidon first stage, coupled with Kirby Morgan second stages. They don't have the Poseidon second stages.

Bob3, what do you think of the built in OPV on the Explorer first stage in the context of a DIR reg? Got an opinion on the Kirby Morgan 2nds? Haven't seen them in person before.
