DIR Halcyon question

Well I plan to get the bungied wings for now anyways, but I know when I go cave, I need to cut/take off the bungies.

It just seems a bit strange - your short term plans (Fundies) and long-term plans (caving) involve GUE-type training and equipment choices, so what's the point in getting equipment that is suited for neither?

Actually fundies is in my long term plans. I'm going to take it with my cave training and tech. But I don't intend to do that for another year and a half to two years. In the meantime I'm still doing just regular recreational diving and the bungies will keep the bladder compact. Besides, the cost difference is negligable so I might as well get the bungies and just take them off. It gives me more versatility anyways. I just don't want to end up having to buy 2 sets of gear just cause my other BP/W didn't meet specs.

Then don't buy the OMS with bungies/quickreleases.... Try a Halcyon, DSS, Golem and all the other "DIR" suitable rigs.

Well I've already had people respond that OMS is suitable and that though the single shoulder quick release is a bit frowned upon, it's still okay. However, OMS is still DIR suitable. I suppose I can switch to continuous harness with no quick release. But my original question was basically is Halcyon the only "accepted" DIR configuration or are other brands acceptable.

The reason why Halcyon is preferred by some is that while a few OMS rigs might be acceptable
the majority of Halcyon products are "DIR" without modification

Ahh, I C. Well I guess I'll have to see which OMS gear is acceptable with minor modification (such as just cutting off the bungies). The reason I'm so set on OMS gear is that I can get a big discount on OMS gear, apeks and maybe dive rite, but not on Halcyon. So I guess single shoulder is acceptable but just barely and I should look into continuous strap? Otherwise the bladders are acceptable for oms?

Single shoulder release is not acceptable for passing the class...

"Backplate System: A rigid and flat platform, of metal construction with minimal padding, held to a diver by one continuous piece of nylon webbing. This webbing should be adjustable through the plate and should use a buckle to secure the system at the waist. A crotch strap attached to the lower end of this platform and looped through the waistband would prevent the system from riding up a diver's back. A knife should be secured to the waist on the left webbing tab. This webbing should support five D-rings; the first should be placed at the left hip, the second should be placed in line with a diver's right collarbone, the third should be placed in line with the diver's left collarbone, the fourth and fifth should be affixed to the crotch strap to use while scootering or towing/stowing gear. The harness below the diver's arms should have small restrictive bands to allow for the placement of reserve light powered by three in-line c-cell batteries (where necessary). The system should retain a minimalist approach with no unnecessary components.
Buoyancy Compensation Device: A diver's buoyancy compensation device should be back-mounted and minimalist in nature. It should come free of extraneous strings, tabs, or other material. There should be no restrictive bands or "bungee" of any sort affixed to the buoyancy cell. In addition, diver lift should not exceed 50lbs for a single tank and 80lbs for double tanks. Wing size and shape should be appropriate to the cylinder size(s) employed for training."

...but you'll probably be able to take the class with that setup.


As always, contact a GUE instructor rather than asking on the internet...they give pretty good answers over email and phone.

You see, it's very hard to help somebody if he has already decided what to go for. Being able to buy something cheap and finding later it's not suitable, always ends up with buying things twice. Honestly, go for a proper equipment from the begining - the price difference can't be so big on one wing. If you plan to go tech route think about price of dry suit, several regulators, helium, etc. and you'll see that 100-200 $ means nothing in the long run.

Heh.. I was afraid of this but YOU SEE that I didn't ask for general advice nor did I ask "hey what should I get" then reject it. I asked "Is it a requirement to use halcyon or is it just that halcyon is preferred?" and "Will I be prevented from taking a fundies class if I have, say, a single shoulder release or something."

I asked a few pretty specific questions that required a yes or no answer and maybe some reasons as to why. FORTUNATELY I had some people that PMed me or left messages that gave me those answers as well as some that gave arguments as to why Halcyon was preferred or pointed me to areas that would answer MY questions.

It's more of a waste of time to assume that because I don't agree with YOU, that I'm wasting MY time.
