I'm not intending to cause a stir or start some sort of flame war, but, as a newbie, I have no idea what these two acronyms really are. I understand that DIR is "DO IT RIGHT", but I have no idea what GUE is.

From what I gather, they are two very different ways of looking at scuba diving with intense views on both sides?

Can someone give me a crash course in what these are?

GUE stands for "Global Underwater Exploration"

...explaining the rest I'll leave to the "DIR" experts because I am sure anything I would have to say about would offend most :D

GUE is a company that teaches diving, the same as padi, andi, bsac whatever.

DIR is a principle and mindset of diving that anyone can adopt, which include gear configuration etc. GUE teaches a strict version of DIR, but also has policies like no smokers are allowed to train with GUE.

i bet you tried to search the forum without any luck.

it won't support searching for fewer than 4 characters, so use a wildcard - search for 'dir*' or 'gue*' and you'll get more than you want!

Wow, I guess I didn't know what I was getting into. There is alot to this stuff.

I'll spend some days reading before I form any oppinions on this.....

Thanks for the links, I'll start researchin....

...did you seriously just put GUE into the same boat as PADI?
I would say they're quite different, IMHO. GUE is (correct me if I'm wrong) a not for profit, while PADI is definitely for profit. They're operated completely differently--PADI is the largest certifying agency out there while GUE is probably one of the smallest, if not THE smallest.

I think GUE is still for profit...

But GUE is probably better dumped in with NSS-CDS, NACD, TDI, IANTD and other technical/cave training organizations...
