Folks,
Just as a point to be able to state my opinion, DIR is only "God's Gift to Diving" if you are of the cult that believes in GI3 as "God Incarnated for the 3rd time".
This is NOT to say, however, that "DIR"-style diving does not have things that are good and helpful to teach us as divers.
Who, after all, can argue that streamlining your rig (as much as is possible) is a bad idea? Who can argue that constant practice to attain good bouyancy and trim is bad? Who can argue that a frog-kick (or some form of it) is not a good way to keep from stirring up the silt? Who can argue that staying in shape, not smoking, and living a healthier life-style is in any way BAD advice, for God's sake! (You will pardon, I hope, my intentional double entendre!

)
The attempt to get the general rank of divers to strive for better practices is a "Good Work", and a long, tough row to hoe. Unfortunately, the good message has been obscured, at times, by the sheer arrogance of some of the movement's leaders, and by some of its (self-professed) acolytes.
(Again, as a merely personal aside, I have friends who are practioners of the "art", instructors in the cave community for instance, from whom I have learned. I value them as friends, and for what they have taught me. I still laugh ruefully about some of it!)
So, are they "God's Gift"? The answer must of course be a resounding: "
NO". Are they "Hellspawn"? The answer must also be a resounding: "
NO".
