Yesterday 5 of us did a beach dive. Extenuating circumstances, I needed to change out a lot of gear for the gear I used. I did some mental math and added 9 lbs weight. That should have been plenty. But when I descended, I was still light and was given a rock to hold, my guess 3-4 lbs. Others were light as well.
Today, same divers, same dive site, same wind direction, same depth, same conditions, and only one hour difference in time of our entry. I added 6lbs to my weight belt. I was still too light! The others added more weight also, though I don't know specifics. Luckily, somebody brought extra weights out and we all got some. I got 4 more! That's 19lbs! The only difference between yesterday was todays water temp was 3° colder.

For the record, we are all experienced enough to be able to guestimate weight. The least experienced has 50 dives, me 500+, and the other three combined are in the thousands. 3 of the 5 are experienced beach divers and have done multiple dives at this site.

Can anybody try to explain why with so many constants, we as a group, despite each making adjustments to their weight there was still such a variance from yesterday? My only thought was the water seemed a bit salty today, but that shouldn't account, at least for me the additional 10lbs difference in needed weight from yesterday. The nine I started with should have been plenty!!

Only reason I am even posting this is because it is so bizzare and the after dive discussion couldn't come up with a reasonable explanation.

Were you all coming off a long winter dry spell?

We ran into the same thing a number of years ago on a first of the season dive. With the gear ultra dry and perhaps a little stiff it was ultra buoyant until reawakened. Likewise lungs will probably be a little fuller when getting back in the game.

Hmmm, interesting. yes, this was dive #1 and 2 for the year for me. #2-3 for one diver and I assume that the others have been diving recently.

No.. why??

No offense, and don’t take this the wrong way… but was it just before that time of the month? Understand that woman can become ‘bloated’, for lack of better terms. Would that have an effect?

PSUShorty.. I was the only woman, there were 4 guys. I don't think they had "that" problem! :rofl3: Interesting we all had the same weight issues...

I was wondering if the veggies was a gas issue.. but couldn't find the right words to "express" it! LOL

Okay then, scratch my hypothesis ;)

Consider your hypothesis scratched! ;)
