I just got my OW through PADI, and I'm certified to go to 60 feet. A friend of mine just got his OW through SSI, and he's pretty sure they told him he's certified to go to 100 feet. Does anyone know SSI's limits for sure? :06:

It is really just a guideline. There are no dive cops....yet. SSI recommends 60ft.

Doesn't really matter. As a new diver, do you really think you want to go to 100'?
There is a whole thread about it now.

Take is slow, dive and have fun. There's lots to see and do above 60'. Once you start getting bored there, you'll be ready to start going deeper. (again, take it slow and build expierence)

Your friend is mistaken. The 100 foot limit is for those who've recently taken the deep diving speciality and have only done a few deeper dives. Eventually it's suggested you can go to 130 feet like everyone else with a deep speciality.

It's one of the questions on SSI's final exam but it only applies to those who take the speciality.

Im an SSI instructor.

Thanks for the info. I wasn't suggesting that I was interested in going to 100 yet -- just curious if and why there was a difference in PADI and SSI. He wasn't sure, so thought I'd check.

No problem. Dive safe and have fun....

My G/F just got her SSI open water cert. this past summer and she too was told she'd be certified to go to 100 feet where as PADI OW allows only 60 feet. I then looked into it myself with her dive instructor and found that fact true. However, the instructor did recommend for SSI OW divers not to exceed 60 feet for safety.

My G/F and I have since been PADI Advanced OW certified to go 130 feet.

My suggestion is to stay above 60 feet until you take the AOW course either thru SSI or PADI. Personally, I prefer PADI as it's still more recognized on a global basis, but both are equally as good from what I've seen in their text book material.

SSI open water diver recommends a limit of 60 ft. Recreational limit is 100 feet. Somewhat confusing, but as someone said earlier, there are no scuba police, and one shouldnt dive what one is not trained to do or comfortable with.

Officially, PADI AOW alone allows you to go up to 30m. Deep diving specialty (full course) allows you to go to 40m.

That is also what I was told in my SSI OW course. I was also told that 60ft is a reccomendation since it is about the max that someone can get to the surface on just one breath in an OOA situation.
