I am trying to decide which of these two lights to buy as a "primary for mostly day diving in the PNW. I will sometimes be night diving as well but for that I plan to acquire a smaller light for backup preferably that also takes a 21700 battery. I can get the D710 for 150 with two batteries and the DGX is 90 with one battery. What do you guys think?
I have the DGX 1000-8 and the D710... there are some slight differences in the how much spill the two lights have (I can't remember which has more). Personally, I slightly prefer the 8 degree beam on the DGX versus the 6 degree on the D710. I just do recreational diving and don't have any specific need for a super narrow beam. I prefer the slightly less intense spot on the 8 degree beam. That said, the DGX 1000 has a bigger head than the D710... I find it a bit harder to tuck under a bungee when I reclip to my harness. It also feels a bit more cumbersome to combine with a second light under the same bungee.
FWIW, I tend to grab both when I go on a dive. And if I need to loan out a light, it's whatever one is on top.
Someone mentioned the Sofirn SD06. I actually like that light a lot, except that it won't fit a 21700 battery with an integrated USB-C charger... Hence it tends to stay home because I am afraid of forgetting the external charger. If you're ok with external charger, SD06 is worth considering.
Unless you are very, very picky about the beam or very, very picky about how it sits in your harness or want something other than a black chassis, I would just get the cheaper one. If the DGX is $90 with a USB chargeable battery, I'd buy that one and get a second battery elsewhere for $30 versus $150 for D710 + 2 batteries.
If you haven't already, you might want to DM @rob.mwpropane and see if he's still able to offer deals on Orcatorch.
