I am trying to decide which of these two lights to buy as a "primary for mostly day diving in the PNW. I will sometimes be night diving as well but for that I plan to acquire a smaller light for backup preferably that also takes a 21700 battery. I can get the D710 for 150 with two batteries and the DGX is 90 with one battery. What do you guys think?

I don’t have direct experience with the 710, but I do have a DGX 1000-6 and I’ve used it extensively as a primary around the PNW. It’s a great light and I’d have no hesitation using it. If you want to save a little money, the Sofirn SD06 has (in my opinion) a better beam and it’s a little smaller, and also cheaper.

What about this Orcatorch

as primary secondary and the other one

I just got the new 710 which has a focusable beam from wide to very tightly focused. I think I am going to like it a lot. The other orca lights I have used are very nice and reliable.

Thanks for the new recommendation I hadn't heard of them.

I looked at that light too but I have had bad luck with focusable lights on the surface I prefer not to push underwater. Thank you though

The 710 is a very nice and compact light, I have the the -8 and it too is a very nice light but less compact, I also have the ZD 710 , seems very well built but even less compact but it does fill several rolls. For a main light I would lean more the dive rite cx3.

While I have all of these, and more, over been diving a wurkos dl03 mostly because it’s even more compact and extremely cheap so I’m trying to get it to break, so far no luck.

That's a lotta light. Do you actually use it like that, how does the divergence effect backscatter?

I get asked this a lot!

Well I suppose that depends on quite a few things like the degree of darkness if I am inside
something, or outside the prevalence of particulates and which type also on the ocean I am
swimming in, and the temperature, whether I have it clipped to my bc, or holding it at arms
length, or with a bent elbow, and what state of charge the really cheap batteries are in, also
the depth is important as is the sun, also important is if I'm shining three beams or just one

or two, man

And yeah if you go night diving and find yourself surrounded by greedy luminaires that light
the place up like the sun fell into the ocean, then you really need not turn your light on at all

Those are both good options. I have both and use them as primaries. I like 21700 powered lights right now for good run time and standardizing my charges on one battery type.
